I get that, money helps of course it does, it gives him access to better treatment etc but that doesn't mean that mentally it isn't tough, missing two years of your career that you probably love, money isn't everything to everyone.
 

I know this sounds a bit brutal and harsh but if he's not fit to at least be playing for u23s to get his match sharpness by the start of next season we possibly need to get him to look at retiring. Danny Williamson and Joe Parkinson come to mind. Both fought on trying to get back but it was ultimately to no avail. Him retiring would pay the remainder of his contract. I'm personally still hoping he can play as he was a defensive midfielder who could play centre back exactly the type of player this squad is missing would allow us to switch from a four to a five at the back within games. However first he needs to get fit secondly he needs to be good enough.
 

If and when he does get back I've a feeling his problems may be psychological,will he stretch that bit further to make an interception or tackle,will he still have the pace we can't remember if he had in the first place?

I think once players start stringing games together then the mental aspect and doubts will hopefully disappear.

Who knows though, strikers who continually struggle with hamstring injuries (Owen and Saha spring to mind) mentioned always having to "manage" how they played so I guess it depends on the injury.

It's looking increasingly likely that he had another injury at some point because Ancelotti was definitely discussing him in November and that he was close to being back with the first team training. That was over 3 months and still no sign of him being with the 1st team.

I wonder if he’ll actually remember how to play football, like what positions he’s supposed to take up on the pitch, how to judge his weight of pass, how to receive the ball into feet etc. He’ll have not played football for two years, surely you have to pretty much re-learn the game.

In a lot of ways a break is preferable to a muscle injury. As you say having to manage the way you play isn't ideal for the Premiership. Snodin always comes to mind,called up for England a hamstring then never the same player.

Yep, Snodin is another good example.

Mentally his head must have been all over the shop but unless someone comes out and tells us differently, it's his physical state which is still holding him back.

I think there is something in this.

If his injury prevents him from playing at the top level then the club should be able to claim the players value as at the time of injury from the insurance policy that the club will hold.

They will need to have demonstrated that they have done everything reasonably possible to rehabilitate and facilitate a return to playing.

From a pure business route ( and is there any sentiment in elite football ?) this may well be the way to go.

We have no idea of his physical or mental state at the moment.
We do know that the club are being cautious and I think we do know that he may have had setbacks on the way but has not had another major injury because that would be reported.

It is my belief that he is probably fit to play but the club have him undergoing a full preseason in an attempt to get him on the pitch sometime before the end of this season.
It is likely he will only be allowed to play when they are satisfied there is nothing more than the normal risk of him getting injured and are being ultra cautious... but that is only my opinion.
 
Carlo mentioned him today when someone asked about midfield reinforcements in the summer . He said they will assess the situation depending on whether he returns from injury .
Didn't mention anything about him returning this season though .
