I'm not sure that what 'Fab' Romano thinks we should get for him holds any more weight than what I think to be honest, but that doesn't really change the point at hand. I can't see it myself but if we got that much for him then even better, it's even more money we can reinvest.
I don't see Keane going. Forgetting my own opinion and just basing it on the way things have gone under Ancelotti, I'd be very surprised if we moved him on. As I said, I can imagine it being Mina or Holgate, I just thought Holgate was a bit easier to assign a value to so I used him in the example. The number of clubs who could match Mina's wages is small, the number of clubs who could match his wages and are at the sort of level where he would be seen as a good signing is smaller still. With Holgate, leaving aside that it's a bit of a stretch to say he covers all 4 positions, I'm just not sure that would be all that relevant. Godfrey basically offers that too if it was needed, but with a new right back and Coleman unlikely to be going anywhere I don't really think it would be a sensible move to hold on to him just on the off chance that you might need him to play full back if 3/4 other players were injured. There's also the matter of whether he'd want to stay to be honest. I just don't see him ever being a key player here, and if he sees it the same way he might think the time's right to try his luck elsewhere. He'll have been here 6 years and be turning 25, he's about to come out of the 'promising' category and into the 'bog standard PL journeyman' category if he doesn't make a position his own soon.
I'd be very surprised if we signed a first team centre half. I think there's probably 5 positions that we actually need players for, adding to that list by selling our first choice players in another position would seem like leaving ourselves an awful lot to do I think.
It’s called building a squad that a new manager wants. I’m not convinced we will sell a CB this summer, unless there’s an opportunity to buy one who ancelotti really likes and thinks he is a level about what we have.
But the reason we bought Gibson from Newcastle and branthwaite was, because of potential and what they could save us and then possibly make us a lot of money. You still need CB’s in your first team while they are developing.
watching Gibson for the 23’s he looked Quality. And I’m not saying he’s missed the boat, but going out to reading and not getting a game, would likely mean he has. And maybe sold in the summer or loaned again. Where he hopefully gets games. Because he probably would have been better staying and learning off ancelotti this season
If we take a punt on a youngster at 17 and he makes the step up in to the team by the 20. He takes someone’s place. That player now maybe he moved on for a decent fee, we can use for another part of the team. I know it’s not that simple.
But the club have huge hopes for Branthwaite and I think he will be on loan in the championship next season, but if he comes through that and at the start of the 22/23 season, he will be part of the squad and one of ancelotti’s 4 CB’s. Then one of the currents ones who’s not seen as a first choice, will be sacrificed.
Holgate, on the wages he's likely on and the "profile" he has makes most sense doesn't it? Ancelotti clearly sees Keane as number 1, and increasingly Mina is cementing his place as a starter. His wages would also be quite prohibitive to sides.
As I think I said the other day, Holgate to a Bournemouth or equivalent would do well. There will always be a mistake in him, and in truth he will sometimes get done positionally as he's not natural at it, but he's quite quick, good on the ball, a good tackler, versatile with a good attitude. Probably for the first time in a while I see him as a squad player who's quite marketable. Players can prove you wrong, but I don't see him having the size, or the defensive fundamentals to be a top defender, but at 24, with consistency of selection at a side he would probably look really good. Fans of a club like Bournemouth (and a mean Bournemouth in the PL) would be more forgiving of his mistakes too.
The best deals in football and life more broadly are where you can see all parties get something from it. If Holgate pitched up at say Brighton next summer, I could see that.
Ancelotti has said that having players who can plauy several positions is important for him. So I think with Holgate able to play LB/CB/RB/DM he's at worst a utility player.
People are forgetting his performances last season + his injury at the start of this season and that hes been in/out of the team. He has a contract to 2025.
Mina is our best centre back when on form. I dont think thats really disputed. However he's had injury set backs and does have the odd error in him. He also only has 2 years left on his contract.
Keane is at his peak value while only being able to perform in a deep defence. He has a contract until 2025.
For all the comments about "Keane and Mina being the best partnership" the problem is that we always have to sit very deep with them. This then means the midfield needs to also come deeper and our forwards are isolated.
I think we need to see Godfrey come into the 11 now at LCB. He's too good not to be a starter.
In terms of who to keep, then if we keep Godfrey, Branthwaite, Keane, Mina, Holgate then it would mean that were really committing to playing deep next season again -- which, with the right full backs and defensive midfielder would be fine. We could also loan branthwaite out for experience if we wanted.
I think if we have branthwaite in the squad and intend to play 4 at the back then 2 of Holgate, Mina and Keane should be sold. In my view, we cant keep playing deep every single game and especially not against the likes of Fulham and Burnley. Its madness.
If he goes on loan then just one player out with a new player in.
Im pretty confident that will be the case. I also dont see how this affects our need for other positions to be filled.
In addition i think Ancelotti will want his own centre back in...he'll want to upgrade the spine.
