I don’t mention a CB but I do agree. But I wouid be selling one Holgate? To buy a better one. Also it was pointed out Mina only has 2yrs left this summer.

maybe at the start of 22/23 Godfrey, Keane, branthwaite and a new CB
It's always hard to guess stuff like this because we never know what the manager really thinks or how developed younger players are. It's possible we'd be looking to buy a new centre half and I think e'd have to if we wanted to change the way we play, but I haven't really seen much evidence that we do so my guess would be that it's not likely this summer. With the other things I think we need, I think from a business perspective Keane, Godfrey and one of the other 2 as your main options with Branthwaite as the back up would suffice, and raise funds to strengthen other areas.

Kean would be the big one. The sensible business decision would be to sell one of the centre halves and move Branthwaite into the squad. Ancelotti appears to favour Keane so I would imagine either Mina or Holgate. If you got £50m for Kean and Holgate it would be pretty good business as far as i'm concerned. I would guess players like Iwobi, Pickford and Gomes would be available alongside the obvious ones, but whether anybody would buy them I don't know.

We should get £50-60mil for Kean alone based not only on my view but also Fab Romano.

Cant see Holgate being sold as at worst he covers all 4 defensive positions.

Mina has 2 years left on his deal and Keane is at peak value. Id not be surprised to see us sell both and invest in an Ancelotti choice of centre back...

If Holgate wants a good career he shouldn't be happy simply being backup, at his age.

I’d say keeper, RB and a forward player who can play across the front. 3 players. RB and forward both with pace. We need to make some actual sales though.
You'd hope that Kean has a stellar end to the season, and we can get some serious coin with a tasty couple of clauses in it. He doesn't work in what we have right now, and he could fund a significant proportion of our incomings (on the assumption he doesn't want to be here).

Sometimes a player just isn't suited to a league, and they often flop when they come from Italy. No shame in cutting out losses (actually gains).

Hope Southgate is a stubborn get who plays Pickford in the summer, and he has a great tournament. Then sell him.

Get a rapid hard working RB who can cross a ball & tackle, quality Goalie & a two-footed RF who has a good turn of pace and can transition the ball well and works hard for the team, and we can put James in the 10 role.

Easy, right? lol

Going to be an interesting summer...

Mina: 2 years left on his deal so either its extended or hes sold.

Keane: Keep him and it means were playing a deep defence again next season and hes at peak value.

Holgate: Sell and we lose someone who can play across defence.

If we keep Godfrey + Branthwaite and one of those 3 players...sell the other two then we have funds for a big signing there.

Keane + Mina sold gives us the most money to go out and bring in a top level centre back.
One of these two is going to depart sooner rather than later, and I think the decision will largely hinge on how the negotiations for Mina's contract extension progress. If we can't get to a deal that both parties like it's hard to see why, from a fiscal point of view, it would be sensible to NOT look to sell him. Equally, if we do agree a deal with Mina I'd say that would make Keane expendable.

With Godfrey firmly bedded in, we have the depth necessary to capitalise on a major asset in this area of the squad. It's the Moneyball approach and I don't like it, but football is a business like any other and we don't have any depth at all in other areas so our investments in the playing staff are currently unbalanced.

Agree with that and to me Holgate is the obvious choice to be sold

I still think midfield is a big issue, the drop in quality after Allan and doucoure is quite steep. Another 3 midfielders better than our back up will help free up James and Richarlison to do what they do best. Richarlison especially is struggling due to having to help out the midfield so much instead of being the attacking player he really is.

Definitely need a superstar CM and another Doucoure this summer.

I'm not sure that what 'Fab' Romano thinks we should get for him holds any more weight than what I think to be honest, but that doesn't really change the point at hand. I can't see it myself but if we got that much for him then even better, it's even more money we can reinvest.

I don't see Keane going. Forgetting my own opinion and just basing it on the way things have gone under Ancelotti, I'd be very surprised if we moved him on. As I said, I can imagine it being Mina or Holgate, I just thought Holgate was a bit easier to assign a value to so I used him in the example. The number of clubs who could match Mina's wages is small, the number of clubs who could match his wages and are at the sort of level where he would be seen as a good signing is smaller still. With Holgate, leaving aside that it's a bit of a stretch to say he covers all 4 positions, I'm just not sure that would be all that relevant. Godfrey basically offers that too if it was needed, but with a new right back and Coleman unlikely to be going anywhere I don't really think it would be a sensible move to hold on to him just on the off chance that you might need him to play full back if 3/4 other players were injured. There's also the matter of whether he'd want to stay to be honest. I just don't see him ever being a key player here, and if he sees it the same way he might think the time's right to try his luck elsewhere. He'll have been here 6 years and be turning 25, he's about to come out of the 'promising' category and into the 'bog standard PL journeyman' category if he doesn't make a position his own soon.

I'd be very surprised if we signed a first team centre half. I think there's probably 5 positions that we actually need players for, adding to that list by selling our first choice players in another position would seem like leaving ourselves an awful lot to do I think.

We have no Right back, a Keeper who throws the ball in the net most weeks, no midfielder who can pick a pass, 1 proper Striker and people think "Yep, lets just sell all our CBs and start again there", cos why not, right?

Yep, that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking but I wrote an unnecessary essay instead.
It’s called building a squad that a new manager wants. I’m not convinced we will sell a CB this summer, unless there’s an opportunity to buy one who ancelotti really likes and thinks he is a level about what we have.

But the reason we bought Gibson from Newcastle and branthwaite was, because of potential and what they could save us and then possibly make us a lot of money. You still need CB’s in your first team while they are developing.

watching Gibson for the 23’s he looked Quality. And I’m not saying he’s missed the boat, but going out to reading and not getting a game, would likely mean he has. And maybe sold in the summer or loaned again. Where he hopefully gets games. Because he probably would have been better staying and learning off ancelotti this season

If we take a punt on a youngster at 17 and he makes the step up in to the team by the 20. He takes someone’s place. That player now maybe he moved on for a decent fee, we can use for another part of the team. I know it’s not that simple.

But the club have huge hopes for Branthwaite and I think he will be on loan in the championship next season, but if he comes through that and at the start of the 22/23 season, he will be part of the squad and one of ancelotti’s 4 CB’s. Then one of the currents ones who’s not seen as a first choice, will be sacrificed.
