Lukaku. Yes or no

Yeah. More rounded in the sense that rather than being good at some and bad at others, he’s actually crap at everything.

Lukaku looked like Stuart Barlow for the majority of his time at United. In his last season, I could easily have said he was "crap at everything", but I didn't - I said he remains a world class goalscorer and would do so at any level.

Tosun, similarly, was abysmal here, but at different levels he will do well. Is he "crap at everything"? No. He just couldn't make the grade in England. Neither could Lukaku in every respect bar his natural elite level ability to score goals.

Which would be a valid view - not mine, but I can see how that opinion can come about. I personally think Lukaku is every bit as 'bad' as Tosun is in many aspects of his game, but so incredibly good at others that it basically disguises his flaws to a large degree, particularly when playing at a lower level.

Tosun, for example, will look fantastic in Turkey. Same as Kean looking fantastic at PSG. It's all about levels.

At higher levels (Champions League, England), Lukaku has consistently been found out.

96 goals and £180m in three moves is found out?

Tubey, you of all people mate..... I never ever thought you’d revert to a Morrison’s car park with stadium jacket post

*shakes head in disappointment

I've done it before when people have called me a racist; it's the one thing I can't leave.

All he has to do is admit he's wrong to call me that and I'll let it go. If he wants to persist, it can go one way if he wants it to.

Lukaku couldn’t make the grade in any aspect except...

*checks notes*

...doing his job.

Again, he has been found out as a footballer; he has not been found out as a goalscorer.

You will never catch me saying he isn't an elite level goalscorer.

But goals are overvalued - he's earned those moves on the chance he'd 'come good' and the goals would follow him. He never has - he never had that Calvert-Lewin-esque transformation in his game. He remained the same - he scored, and did nothing else.

Literally the only thing of value in a game of football.

Again, that's where we disagree. You see goalscoring as 'doing his job'; I see the modern role of any striker as much, much, much more than scoring goals.

It'd be his 'job' at a West Brom/Fulham, fighting for survival, hoping to nick games by brute force of scoring and then hanging on for dear life with 10 men. It's not his job when you're a top team trying to break stubborn opposition down through pressure, and the ball keeps ping ponging off his shins.

It's all about levels. Lukaku is many levels below where some perceive him to be purely because of his goal output.
