ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Klopp now saying “a top 4 finish is the priority”.
I know mind games are part and parcel nowadays but does any take notice of this shyte hawking anymore? The pie eyed piper thinks he is a genius now throwing other managers off the scent.
I bet Guardiola is delighted to hear the rat shyte arent focused on winning the title now.
These kind of sound bites drive me mad.

MOTD surprised me, Henderson and Kloops interview for the BBC shows what a bunch of arrogance delusional idiots they are, Klopp said Iwhen you have a team full of world class players and all you do is defend your box, an Henderson was was asked, did Utd deserve to win? Who said that? Players and Manager. O right(said in a did they F kind of way)
The main guy said to Danny Murphy do you agree and he said NO

They have taken this result surprisingly badly. I said in the lead up to the match, the draw is actually an ok result for then. It keeps them in touch and allows them to get some players back. I suppose the form of City, who look to be getting into gear with Aguero to return and Jesus to hit his stride worries them a bit. Out of all of the teams, they will be the hardest to chase down. Maybe that has contributed.

Maybe some just believed the hype that with a 10 day gap compared to Uniteds 3 day gap they'd wipe the floor with them. United have done really well this season though, so I'm not sure why they thought they were good enough to just turn up and win if they did.

Either way, heads are really falling off for them. I think deep down they know, they haven't really even got that many players left to come back. Jota is a decent squad option who had a bit of a purple streak, but he's not in their best front 3. Gomez they all know deep down is a liability and Fabinho is a better centre back. Thats their best 11 today, with the exception being that Van Dijk comes in and Henderson plays in midfield ahead of Shaqiri. It makes nominal difference to todays game as well. And thats peak Van Dijk, never mind the Van Dijk who likely comes back who will be anywhere from quite reduced in his skillset to massively reduced in his mobility.

It seems to a lot of them, todays feels like the day they've realised they won't win the league, or at least aren't favourites for it. I said consistently only them and City are capable of going on a run of say 6-8 straight wins, and in truth Liverpool look miles off that now. City could do, and in honesty if they do, they will have the league sewn up at a canter again.

This certainly feels the biggest moment of crisis for Klopp since he arrived. First time in 15 years they've gone 3 games with no goal. You throw the 2nd half in against West Brom too and it's 3.5 games really, so not sure how long youd have to go back for such a record. They seem to get the ball into decent scoring positions, but now lack the guile and speed to get good shots away.

In fairness to opponents, they seem to have sussed out that defending the box works. As Carragher says the liked if Firmino are not great ball shooters, and Mane/Salah thrive in space. It was noticeable how often United left Arnold and particularly Robertson free and how little ever came from them when they did.

They are in a moment of real difficulty. The question is, how far will the contagian spread now. In fairness to Klopp, he has always stopped the contagian spreading before, but now, who knows? Spurs mustreally fancy their chances to turn them over at the weekend.

Even your Footy Banter Twitter pages have firmly put their colours to the mast...

Pickfords fault they can’t score lol

Funny that... this website let's you look at the table from a certain date and in the 12 games after VVD injury until now Liverpool are joint top scorers in the league.

they would do it anyway and do it twice as much because they have no concept of other and the image they portray. No shame FC will always go above and beyond to throw the limelight on themselves. When your moral compass is that low there is nothing they wouldnt stoop to
Yep even if 5 league titles are won by other teams, rest assured they'll still want their parade from 2019/20 to make them feeelnrelevant still.

If you're a Kopite you'd be worried that with a 9 day preparation for that game - and the much talked about post-Southampton defeat 'clear the air' team meeting - they looked pretty gummy in a statement game against United.

I sense they dont believe this season; and I wouldn't be surprised to see Burnley take a point at Anfield this week.

The 10 days break from Southampton was most significant. They had the easiest schedule over xmas and a second long break.

There is obviously a short and more medium term thing happening here though. Theres no doubt it's a short term hit now. However medium term, since that Watford game it's been poor. I saw something the other day that showed from when Fernandes joined United they were 3rd or 4th in the table. For most of those games they had their famed best team in the world too.

It's a medium crisis for them now which is lasting close to a year. I said at the time, that Watford game would be significant. It showed a blueprint for how to beat them, and with each week that goes by, more video evidence emerges of how to do so. Opposing players gain more confidence, and Liverpool players lose confidence.

Like Pep before him, he created a bespoke system that took a bit of time to work out. Like City it was eventually worked out and there was some re adjustment time. Unlike Pep I am doubtful he has either the ability or the humility to radically overhaul his system. He didnt at Dortmund. I also don't think they will have 100+m to bring in 2 key defenders to help change the system.

City have been in transition for 18 months, and have now re emerged as a different type of team. More solid. They will probably spend 200m+ in the summer to box the attacking side of the team. They will be back on another level for Liverpool. Throw Haaland/Lukaku/Messi at that team and its levels ahead of Liverpool and that's before the transition.

As a final aside, 18 months for City to re emerge and that is;
1) Quicker than may be expected
2) The decline was quite shallow (partly due to league composition
3) With a lot of money spent
4) With an open minded manager happy to embrace the need for change.

Liverpool have none of those. Objectively you would have to say it could be a deeper and longer dip. In a strange way, the longer Klopp drags his heels, the longer the dip will be.

I'll be frank, like with Dortmund Klopp will not be hanging around for it. I pray to God they go and get Gerrard in. Hes way out of his depth. It will be Souness MK 2.

I pretty much said the same thing when they won it last season. The set of players, as with most modern footballers, don't have the motivation to keep winning after they've done it once.

They win the league/champs league, next step... eye a big money move somewhere or get a bumper contract. Feet up.

He whinged on about this when Athletics smash and grabbed them out of the Champions league last season. Awww, poor you, the opposition won't let you win by playing into your tactical set up and strengths.

"We won the attacking intent"

Good point regarding City and their rebuilding job. Very difficult for any club to win league titles back to back, to then go and try and win it a 3rd or even 4th time is almost impossible in a league such as ours.

Maybe a lot of people wrote of Pep & City off too early though, rebuilds are absolutely necessary in longevity and teams constantly need to be evolving. City look really strong right now, I didn't fancy them a couple of months ago but they look by far the best team in the league at the moment with the almost certainty they will strengthen more in the summer. I think they may have thought about planning to win the league again next season but with this season being wide open I think they smell blood.

I honestly don't think Liverpool, Klopp and his management have that foresight, it's boom or bust and need players sales to finance any big signings. This could be their last shot at a title for a few years and I think cracks are starting to show.

That was United's 3rd game since a much changed Liverpool had to play a second string Villa in the cup...and United looked like they were blowing Liverpool off the pitch in the last half hour of the game.

Belief not there and they have their "we've got loads of injuries excuse" lined up.

There's a lot of talk about City stepping back and abandoning a pressing game and conserving more energy what with the two games per week programme. I think the key is that they figured out how to win more matches without Aguero to fall back on. If he gets fit and comes back in it'll be interesting to see how many games he starts.

Sounds to me like they need a perfect, injury free, plain-sailing league campaign like last season to win anything.

Good post.
The problem with Aguero is that he usually needs a run of 3 to 4 games before he's back to his best.
I have a feeling Pep's plan maybe that he is at his best for the CL games. Anything else is a bonus and he won't risk him which makes sense. As you say, the system has now changed. We no longer try to blow teams away as we don't need to because of the defence. I think I read that we have had 18 different players who have scored goals this season. If that's true then its mental!
