If we do sign him on loan for the last year of his contract and pay his entire weekly wage of £200kpw, assuming the contract runs to the 1st of June as most do, we will only be paying 3/4s of his full annual salary as its already September, which equates to £7.8m, the equivalent of £150kpw for the full year. He then signs a new deal at the end, for a reduced weekly wage, and we pay them a nominal fee as a loan, maybe £4-5m.

It could end up being a very shrewd piece of business, getting a top player for next to nothing.

Brands Out.

Yeah, not sure what they'll do about wages though because he was taking a paycut to come to us so I'd imagine it means we'd be paying more wages?

A loan takes a bit of the shine off the signing but it does make sense as long as we do actually sign him at the end of the loan.

RE Wages: He could have agreed to do what Sandro did to stay at Valladolid and take a pay cut out of his own choosing?

I just don’t see anything other than a permanent deal personally.

Loan is perfect. If he is injured all the time then we know not to splash, if he makes a good contribution despite an injury or two then we know he's free.

given his injury record, a loan with an option to buy would be the most sensible option. i would feel a bit uneasy about signing him permanently on a 3-year deal. we're in the driving seat here, the transfer should be done on our terms.

Wouldn’t Madrid then lose out because if we decide not to splash as you say, then his contract is up with Madrid and he leaves them on a free? Can’t see Madrid taking that gamble to be honest.

If we loan him, we will only pay a percentage of his wages. As said above if it works out and the fans are back in Goodison, he will fall in love with the club. I do hope it's a loan, reduces the risk.
