I’ve always been a big Brands supporter, but aren’t the sort of conversations that the press (I know) say we’re having now be the sort we should have been having January-July?

Had a lot more time than he would have in normal circumstances, and feels like we’re nowhere near any of our targets

Its chess.

We can sign him tomorrow if we pay 40m for him and give him 200k a week.

But that's not what we should do.

So you play the game.

This is the transfer window in a nutshell. It’s about driving the best attainable deal for all parties, and that’s insanely difficult - especially if you’re looking to buy better players than you already have.

The same people who loudly complain about us not getting deals sorted instantly also complain about £45 million being paid for Gylfi.

You don’t get to complain about both of those things.

I don't see that as what he was asking. Why weren't these negotiations being done a long time ago if there's been interest since January?

As will we and also that's when we start lashing silly money for average players.

Do your business early, get your team settled and start the season ready.
The counterpoint to this is going out in the first two weeks of a 3 month window and paying way over the odds for one player and having less money to spend on other positions.
All clubs work to budget constraints both internal and external and we are certainly no exception.
Ancelotti said it would be evolution not revolution and I think anybody expecting us to roar out of the blocks next season and immediately be muscling in amongst the big six is going to be mightily disappointed.
Whilst it is always preferable to get players in early it is far more important to ensure we get the right players at the right price.
I hope we then allow the manager time to ease the new players in and improve the existing players to build a team capable of challenging at the top.
A trophy would be pleasant this season but an improved team is a far more likely and realistic aim.
Evolution not Revolution as the man said.
