I'd argue that playing Champions League football in a good stable side that grabs silverware and in a country where he may find it easier to settle offers the better chance to impress but I agree with the sentiment. Same destination, different routes.
If he's in a league that habitually sells it's best talent and also gives him a showcase in the Champions League then it's potentially a perfect stepping stone to an elite club....if that's what he wants. As you say, who knows mate?
From a neutral's perspective Everton may well look more like a slippery outcrop of jagged rocks than a stepping stone.
