I don't think the Zaha one will happen this year. he is 28 in September and on £130k a week at Palace, I don't think there are many teams that would be willing to pay £60m plus the wages. He relies heavily on his pace and once he's over 30 that's liable to decline, he is on a contract there till summer 2023 so this time next summer palace may look to sell and cash in, but again would you want to sign a 29 year old on that kind of money for over £30m on big wages?

Pure speculation

Yes, but one informed by decades working in/around MedTech with massive interaction with orthopaedics and sports medicine specialists. Multiple consecutive injuries and a prolonged recovery period after multiple surgeries means 100% certain significant muscle loss and weakening of ligaments and tendons through a combination of injury trauma, surgical stress and inactivity. This has to be reversed by prolonged physiotherapy and exercises targeted specifically at reestablishing base physical fitness before any specific sports training.

I went through this myself as a non-elite mid 30s Dad body athlete and it was six months of tedious strengthening exercises before I was allowed to gradually include limited running, jumping etc. It was a full year before I could kick a ball without any discomfort. Obviously a younger elite athlete can potentially recover faster but they also often incur more severe injuries.

We’ve now brought him back twice and twice he’s got hurt again quickly, likely because some muscle group or soft tissue separate to the initial injury was not sufficiently strengthened. This should make both the player and medical staff cautious about his recovery this time. We should not expect him back quickly and we should not expect him to be anywhere close to his physical peak when he does reappear. There are no shortcuts in these circumstances.
