Thaksin Shinawatra was Prime Minister of Thailand before he owned city. The implication was he bought them with basically embezzled Thai funds.

I used to see him for a few years after he sold city eating at a thai fast food place in Dubai a dubai shopping mall, quite surreal.

At the time he was unable to go back to Thailand. Not sure of his current status.
