I think the Swedish point is a fair one. The 1919 flu they felt the first wave was defeated, and the 2nd wave was far more deadly. From my limited understanding, the virus could mutate and could become more serious, or less serious, so we have to see.

All my original point was, the idea that we can't "hide away at home" to fight this virus is the opposite of what has proven to have worked thus far.

The consensus is that older people had a degree of immunity because they had been exposed to a similar virus. The young hadn't been exposed, so they had built up no immunity and suffered a much worse outcome.

Being exposed to viruses is the whole rationale behind vaccines. Hiding away just means that when you are exposed the outcome is usually much worse.

The best example is Eskimos who have seen whole villages wiped out by a series of viruses and diseases because their isolation means they are unable to build specific immunity to causative agents that are introduced from outside their community. At one time each human is usually infected with a whole series of viruses. Usually our immune system overcomes those viruses, and we are asymptomatic. However, that exposure means our immune system identifies similar viruses and learns how to react and how to protect us.

I think immunity really has to be done alongside a vaccine though. I'm seeing little to suggest if we just let old people catch this, they'd develop immunity.

A couple of things firstly the reason old people are adversely effected by COVID-19 is because our immune systems become less effective as we get older that is also why people whose immune systems are compromised have far worse outcomes.

Secondly vaccines have to be tested. Fewer people being infected means that vaccine testing takes longer. If you reduce the R number then you can virtually wipe out the virus. That sounds great but it means it is virtually impossible to produce a vaccine and even worse you create the perfect scenario for a second wave.

To test a vaccine you need to discover how many people who are vaccinated contract the virus compared to the general population. When the number of cases is really low you end up with no data.

So from 21st June, with a one week exception, we'll play weekend, midweek, weekend thru to the end of July.

We wont be fielding a full team by the time it gets to Bournemouth. 14 week break followed by 6 weeks constant football. We're goona need a bigger treatment table.

Maybe the constant playing of weekend/midweek will be a good experience for when Everton play in Europe?

Be interesting to see if the R rate increasing will lead to more positive tests in players over the next few weeks. Not that the PL care, mind.

I don’t personally see how any second wave or spike will affect the PL restart as I’d imagine players and stay are probably being asked to isolate as fully as possible with the run up to kick-off.
