It may well even invalidate a contract and allow them to walk away for nothing. If you were the likes of VVD you would consider it.

I'm pretty sure that it's written in all premier league players contracts that they can't have their wages cut for no reason but they could have it in their contracts that they get a lesser wage if they qualify for Europe or get relegated?

Yes. I am just going off what they did with their baseball team. I imagine if clubs agree wage cuts theoretically players could break the contract and leave for free.
