It annoys me when the press write Everton always gives their youngsters a chance, when in reality we dont. DM will play the more `experienced` players over any youth.

Any young player comes into the team when DM is forced to play them, a prime example is playing Hibbert CB and not giving a young player a go. We have enough CB`s that we are looking to bring into the first team, yet they dont get a look in.

Gueye has not had a chance yet but when he has played in friendlies and the Carling cup looks like he could improve us. Joao Silva came and gone on loan. Mustafi and Duffy, where are these.

I've said this before, mate.

That season when we played youngsters a lot was down to an injury crisis; Moyes' hand being played for him.

You're right mate. Against Benfica, and also against AEK Athens away. By the end of the match, we had a load of youngsters on the pitch due to injuries. We needed to win that night as well. I got soaked.

Great goal from Bily though, set up by none other than.....Jo.

If anyone has read my academy reports you will have noticed i have mentioned Johann Hammer on several occasions, he looks a class act and with experience and good coaching he could be a good finnished article. Remeber where you heard it first

Smalling was 20 when he signed for United and had some experience with Fulham, but Fergie still put a lot of trust in him to play him in the matches he has done recently. I don't think he's naturally the most confident of players, but he does seem to be maturing nicely because of the responsibility. Duffy is only 18 months younger, yet appears to have very little prospect of first-team football either with us or out on loan.

I agree with you about Gueye. I think he could have offered us the straight-forward option of a winger who likes to get to the byeline and put the ball in when we needed him to come on in the closing stages of games. I don't think that it would have been an unrealistic expectation of the lad.

Coleman aside, it's very rare for Moyes to fast-track players into the first team. It's taken Vaughan and Anichebe about 5 years to establish themselves! How long as Rodwell been around the squad? I know that every Premier League point is precious and that we can't afford not to progress in the cups, but I think that throwing some players in at the deep end might actually be good for them. When Baxter came on against Bolton he looked like our best option for a goal. Yet we know that he'll be very lucky to get on again this season.

true mate. i dont know where the media got the idea from coz its way off the mark, i know they make stuff up but to say moyes is known for playing youngsters has got to be an inside joke played by journalists to amuse one-another

Vaughan and Anichebe still haven't established themselves!!

Coleman only got his chance at RM because Osman got injured. He never had a chance at RB, and would have been replaced by Osman had he not grabbed said chance with both hands.

Naturally we as outsiders don't know who's ready and who isn't, but Moyes is cautious with youth. In a season when we've been utterly crap, he's taken the decision on many occasions to put out the same players time and time again. I don't see why he doesn't play a youngster now and then. And not for 8 minutes at the end of a game you're losing 2-0. I mean, at half time, or even at the start of a game.

If there's no light at the end of the tunnel for these young players, then what kind of motivator is that?

I'm sure they used Crocketts Theme on Grandstand when they were running through the league tables- it was always on the radio as well the year we last won the league- good times indeed.

Johann seems positive from his quotes anyway- be nice to get 1 or 2 of the crop behind Rodwell's age group in & around the squad over the next couple of seasons.

Exactly. I think it's as much about Moyes finding it difficult to trust any players other than the core that he is familiar with as it's about developing youth correctly. The likes of Ruddy, Jutkiewicz and Daniel Fox knew that there was no prospect of breaking through with us, but are now more than competent Championship players. How on earth are Duffy and Baxter going to get any game time for us? We have a squad of only about 18 senior players now who complain that they're not being pushed for their places. Given that we have only kept about two clean sheets all season, how much worse could Duffy really be?
