Fully expect the clubs who have said they’ll do this will announce a retraction and apologise for their “error of judgement” in the coming days.
Too much fan pressure for them to continue down this path now. Worse still, the government may yet deny them the ability to do this as they can still adapt the furlough system.
It would be quite the poetic justice if these clubs paid their employees on the basis of recovering the cash from HMRC and the government changes the qualifying criteria lol (which really should be a priority anyway).
In fairness to this government, which haven’t got a lot right, they rushed that rule out to immediately support small businesses and halt redundancies, probably without considering some of the implications that bigger business may take advantage of, this being a very clear example of that unfortunately.
For clubs like Liverpool and Newcastle, this decision will ultimately cost them more in good will amongst their own fan base (which ultimately converts to ££££ anyway). At best, it’s ill-advised, foolish and poorly timed, at worst it’s greedy, selfish and insensitive at a time when the country is at it’s most vulnerable.
Shame on them.
