Potential cancellation of games - Coronavirus

The plan in Italy atm is to restart Serie A in mid-April if possible, but most likely May.

That obviously depends on the outcome of the virus lockdown over there.

And, if it was a May restart, then that'd only happen if the Euros were postponed.

Where have u seen that? There’s big talk of a play off or just voiding the season

Serious question- who qualifies for European football next season?

Current placings?

Play offs?

No European games at all?

The same 5/6 teams from last seasons end. City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, Man U, Wolves.

Nobody from current PL (Championship, League 1 etc) goes down. Nobody from the same leagues go up.

Some will benefit, some will miss out but its the only way to make it fair. Doubt a pandemic could be challenged in the courts.

The only problem with a suspension and playing catch up with fixtures is that we have no idea how long this will go on for.

Its ok saying we will play in June, there are 9 games left. You would have to fit 9 games (Plus CL/EL fixtures for some as you could guarantee UEFA wont miss out) a FA cup final, a CL/EL final - Championship playoffs and a final. UEFA would be fighting eith the leagues to prioritise fixtures.

Then after that the new season fixture list needs sorting, which takes planning but can only be done when you know all the teams, the summer transfers etc.

All this before the 2nd week in August when the new season starts? The players wouldnt get a break anywhere.

Its not feasible. They are only going to get a small window to re start before it has to be void

I sense this too. Bear in mind if players are isolating they will not be able to re-start immediately. Football has a 4-6 week break at the end of seasons and then a 6-7 week preseason to begin. We wont have those numbers, but there will need to be a lead in time.

The assumption as well, that UEFA will just happily abandon the CL and Europa league to help the PL is nonsense. While I can see Euro 20 being moved, the CL/EL are direct rivals to the PL. If football re starts they will want them being re-scheduled too. They will face similar threats of litigation and loss of revenue if they are not. So expect very little help, and very little joined up thinking between governing bodies if there is a suspension.

I think they will suspend first, and as time goes by then look to void, once that has set in.

There will be lots of anger, but they can stand behind the exceptional circumstances line, and legimtiately say they tried to do everything possible to keep the competition running. It would fall under exceptional circumstances legally too.

I think theyve lost a massive moral high ground tonight. Going against what the rest of the world was doing, only to then have a manager contract the virus and have to review the decision within an hour looks pathetic. It will shock them to the core and probably lead them to be cautious as to restarting the competition.

Haha. That will be City, Utd, Chelsea - all hate Liverpool, (hopefully us), Spurs as they would make CL again and the relegation threatened clubs so they dont lose money.

Pretty much 70-80% of the league. That would be incredible.

But the only clubs that matter in the league will be for carrying on because United might make 4th and Liverpool will win it. The other 18 don’t matter a jot.

They could put season back to September maybe?
Its a massive assumption at this point, to base anything on the 2nd August having to be the start of next season.

So start the season later means the players cant have a break otherwise it will head into the re-arranged Euro's.

There is already moaning about the pile up and a winter break. You only have to add 2 weeks onto the beginning of the season and there goes the winter break.

The Euros is gonna get cancelled, think it’s pretty safe to say that

But even then, if the projections hold for over here and the worst of the disease comes in 12 weeks time, that’s still too close to the space they’d have in order to finish up

I sense a deep anger in how this has been handled. Politicians are savvy, particularly the Tories who will change direction and start urging real caution.

If games are cancelled now, it would have to be proven the situation is much better than it is now. We have hundreds of cases, but unofficially could be 10k. Even without the disease getting worse that number will rocket over the coming weeks, and I cant see it getting back down to the level it is at now for a substantial period of time (well beyond May) and that's with effective decisive action (which we are not getting currently).

I'd hazard a guess that neither the Champions League or the Europa League will finish this season, nor will most of the domestic leagues. If that happens then they'll just start again next time with the same qualifiers as started this season.

There's unlikely to be time for anything else.

United would void the season in a heartbeat.

Only Liverpool will kick up a fuss.

Crazy when you think what is at stake. We have allowed sport to become more important than life and death, and that is appauling and disturbing.
