McCann has left Fylde after playing 71 times for Fylde across two seasons. The midfielder has said he found it hard to refuse a move to Chesterfield who are currently 22nd in League One. The midfielder looking to progress his career and is appreciative of all the support he received from his time at Fylde.

The supporters are disappointed with the sale of one of their brightest players and are hoping Ferguson has a plan to bring in a replacement.

CLAYTON JOINS THE CLUB!

Adam Clayton.webp

Midfielder Adam Clayton has joined Fylde on a 6 month contract. The midfielder was up for sale from League One side Luton and still can do a job in football despite just turning 36 years old. Duncan Ferguson had this about the transfer:

DF: He's experienced and has played at a good level for many years, we have a young squad and some bright up and coming midfielders, Adam was brought in to use his experience and to help pass on his wisdom to these players. He brings stability to the centre of the park which is what we need. He has a great head on his shoulders and he could be the catalyst to help us gain promotion this season.

F.A. TROPHY SECOND ROUND

wrexham result.webp

Fylde travelled to Wrexham for their F.A. Trophy second round game. Ferguson went with a three man midfield in Croasdale, McGavin and new signing Adam Clayton, Wrexham dominated play as Fylde expected but managed to keep things tight for the duration of the 90 minutes. The game was to go to extra time. Second half sub Danny Smith got an assist for the goal scored by Henderson who poked in the cross from the byline. Fylde battled for the remaining 25 minutes to hang on to their goal and progress Fylde into the third round.

DF: It was a tough afternoon, Wrexham had us pinned back for large parts of the game but we dealt with it well at the back. Griffiths made some fantastic saves and kept us in the cup. Clayton had a good game, his experience was vital to us and he instructed the side to keep their shape and keep things compact. We got our goal and won the game, that's what we came to do and I'm happy to be in the draw for the next round.

DULWICH RESULT.webp

Danny Smith rescued a point for Fylde in a difficult encounter with Dulwich Hamlet. The first half drew to a close at 0-0 but it was Dulwich who broke the deadlock 6 minutes after the restart through Harris who had the space from outside the box to get his shot away into the bottom right corner with Griffiths at full stretch unable to get near it. Fylde equalised when they won the ball back from the goal kick in the centre circle, Ginnelly received the ball from McGavin and he cut open the defence playing the ball through for Danny Smith who hit it first time slotting past the keeper. Fylde struggled for possession in the final third and were unable to create any further chances. Dulwich Hamlet will be the happier of the two sides taking a point away from Mill Farm.

It was a quiet first half at Moor Lane in front of 2,200 fans but John Barwell changed the dynamics of the game when he scored a free-kick at the end of the first half. Barnwell got his free-kick up and over the Fylde wall and into the corner leaving Griffiths with no chance. Fylde came straight out for the equaliser when Wright-Phillips bombed forward evading the challenges from the opposing players, got his cross in but Henderson blazed his shot over the bar. Just over ten minutes later Wright-Phillips sent an in-swinging corner into the box but it was cleared towards Ryan Reynolds who put it back in, going straight back to Wright-Phillips who had his first cross blocked, he got another go at it, took a touch and curled a shot into the bottom corner on his right foot. Great finish for the winger. 16 year old striker Lee Lofthouse got his Fylde debut when he replaced Tyrone O'Neill on 81 minutes. The striker showing great enthusiasm chasing down the Salford defence and will be proud to get his debut making him the youngest player to pull on a Fylde shirt.

Forest green result.webp

It looked like it was as good as over when Forest Green went 2-0 up very early and put a dent in Fylde's promotion chances. However, what we were about to see was a management masterclass from Duncan Ferguson. Ryan Croasdale played it into feet for Euan Henderson who smashed it towards goal flying into the top right corner. Fylde now only a goal behind going into the second half. Fylde changed to two up front, Ginnelly making way for O'Neill who partnered Martin Withers and Wright-Phillips came on for Danny Smith. Fylde now looking in control and taking the game to Forest Green who sat deep dealing with any oncoming attacks from Fylde. Martin Withers came close to grabbing the vital second goal when a quick break saw Fylde get the ball forward to Wright-Phillips who threaded it through to Withers and his shot was inches wide of the post. Fylde won a free-kick 20 yards out and Giuseppe Bellusci stepped up and hit one right into the corner! 2-2 and Fylde now back in with a chance. With 15 minutes remaining, both sides were throwing everything at it, Forest Green had a corner with a header being cleared off the line by Tyler Garrett. Forest Green launched an attack as the board went up for additional time, Jacob Wakeling being denied by a superb save from Griffiths and Bellusci throwing himself in the way of the rebound. Fylde got the ball forward to Croasdale who found Ashley Hammond, Hammond had the front three of O'Neill, Withers and Wright-Phillips, O'Neill received the ball at his feet, knocked it to Wright-Phillips who swaw the run of Withers, passed it into his feet, Withers hit it first time low and it rolled right into the bottom corner! 3-2 to The Coasters! Fylde remained calm in possession and done what they had to to run down the clock. A great comeback in the second half when they looked dead and buried in the first.

DF: I kept my team talk simple, go back out there and play on the front foot, get the ball moving forward, Forest Green will not be able to match us in an attacking sense. I went with two up top to get us the goals, what a second half that was! Fantastic from each and every one of them and we needed this win. Bellusci was fantastic at the back and who'd have thought it at 35 years old? He was outstanding today. He kept us in the game at times and kept us organised.

LEAGUE TABLE

Table after 32.webp

The victory against Forest Green was very much needed for Fylde who now sit in third place on the same points as second place Northampton Town. There will be a lot of change amongst the top ten over the coming weeks, can anybody find consistency to take them to the title? It's not over yet.

F.A. TROPHY THIRD ROUND

Boreham wood result.webp

Martin Withers led the attack for Fylde on the afternoon of their F.A. Trophy third round tie against Boreham Wood and he repaid the faith shown in him with two first half goals. Wright-Phillips crossed to the near post but Withers headed attempt was saved down low at the post, Withers followed it up and put it right into the back of the net. Richie Ginnelly turned the defender and slotted the ball through to Wright-Phillips who knocked it inside the box for Withers to slot past the keeper. Great start for Fylde and a fantastic first half performance to match. Fylde played quick attacking football and after Boreham Wood had a header ricochet off the bar, they broke quickly up field winning a corner from Wright-Phillips' cross. Mick Wisdom put in a very good performance in midfield, certainly showing Ferguson he should be playing more often. Second half substitute Adam Clayton found Wisdom in space who had time to take a touch and look up before belting the ball into the top right corner. A goal to round off a wonderful display. There was a bit of nervous tension going into the last ten minutes of the game, McElligott's shot was hopeful and should have been saved, Griffiths fumbling the ball over his line. Boreham Wood got themselves another on the 90th minute, McGill getting in front of Bellusci to knock the ball past Griffiths to create a very tense finale. Fortunately enough for Fylde they had enough about them to keep control of the ball and dwindle down the clock. Into the Fourth Round they go with 8 teams now remaining in the competition.

DF: First half was what we aspire to be week in week out, it was a sublime first half performance, second half we were still playing well but we seemed to drift off in the last ten. It was a close finish but all credit to Boreham Wood for showing some grit and getting back in the game.

You are now into the final eight of the competition, how important is this trophy to Fylde?

DF: We've never won this trophy and I think it's about time we put an end to that. These lads want medals to look back at and if they work hard enough they can go all the way. Barring any injuries, we have a squad that can deal with the league as well. I look forward to the draw!
