Anyone else think a three man back line with 5 in the midfield and 2 upfront might be interesting for us? I've never understood why three in the back against 2 strikers (at most in the PL) wouldn't work. We're thin in the back, loaded in the middle, and today proved that 2 upfront makes us dangerous. Thinking something like this:

----------------------------------Howard----------------------------------
Jagielka------------------Distin---------------------------------Baines--
---------------------Arteta--------------------Fellaini---------------------
-----------Coleman---------------------------------------Pienaar--------
--------------------Cahill/Rodwell/Bily------------------------------------
Saha----------------------------------------Beckford---------------------

Am I crazy?

Not crazy sir, but I wouldnt suggest Baines as part of a back 3

If I was to play a 3-5-2 I would go with

Howard

Jagielka, Heitinga, Distin

Coleman, Fellaini, Arteta, Rodwell, Baines

Beckford, Saha

for example....

The amount Baines bombs forward, we don't want him sat back there all day, no way!! =)

not sure i'm reading this right. typically in a 3-5-2 you want your back 3 to be solid centre backs, who will only push up occasionally. baines wouldn't be able to do this, in any 3-5-2 type scenario he would be better suited to play as a midfielder, which nullifies any benefit as far as accomodating more players in midfield goes. believe me, i'd love a way to make use of our many capable midfielders, but i really don't think this is it.

Noted.

Would Arteta work better as a deep lying mid or more forward in the formation?

Could've even played

Howard

Neville Heitinga Distin

Fellaini

Coleman Arteta Pienaar Baines

Saha Beckford

tonight so Fellaini marks VdV out the game

yea.. I just prefer Rodders over Heitenga personally..

plus I think Rodwell would make an excellent sweeper.

I think Rodders best position is attacking mid at this point though. With a three man backline, you need experience and guile back there.

Neville, Jags, Distin, Heitinga, and Hibbo could rotate.

Good god no! 3 centre backs? Moyes gets enough criticism for being too defensive as it is.
