Dave Chappelle Sticks and Stones

I think he is defending comics like Sarah Silverman (who let’s be honest brought this upon herself by joining the far left cult in virtue signaling and politics) that have had their careers derailed for things they have said in the past.

I’d like to see comedy return to what it was when everybody was offending everyone. Standup has gotten so stale, inoffensive and political that I haven’t actually watched a special in some time. Good to see Dave stick it to the man. These speech nazis have ruined comedy.

I like Chapelle. Seems very odd how you’re so desperate to say offensive things about people and pretend it’s comedy. When exactly do you want it to return to?

Probably to the time when Carlin & Hicks were saying offensive things and being lauded for it. They wouldn't stand a chance in todays' world.

Hicks is a poor comic who got away with being angry yet was limited in much of what he said.
Carlin was very good. I don’t see much that he’d have struggled with. You’re discussing this in a thread about a man who has just been given another Netflix special despite apparently being against the grain. The same service has broadcast Hicks’ stand up shows. So why do you think they wouldn’t stand a chance?

Don’t pop this line and pretend you came here with good intentions. You can like/dislike whatever comedy you want. I’m not going to judge you for your tastes. You are looking for any excuse to be an inflammatory weirdo, so find something better to do.

Hicks is a lot of people's favourite ever stand-up. Personally I prefer Carlin's depth. I agree both were angry, but Hicks was a fine comic, and he has arguably the finest speech by a comedian ever (It's just a ride...).

Why would Hicks and Carlin have problems breaking through now? Because they would hurt the feelings of certain groups of people. You ask any comic in todays' age what the biggest issue is in contemporary stand-up and most will tell you the same thing: comedy is being neutered by the fear of offending influential groups of people.

I linked Chappelle talking about this...people lose their jobs for saying something 'wrong'.

Didn’t find it offensive at all, also didn’t find it that funny much like his last special... he doesn’t make me laugh like he used to, same goes for Bill Burr who used to crack me up but now comes across as tiresome.

Hilariously enough I think that is the point for me. This was actually deemed offensive by a lot of people. He actually got under people’s skin with this which is crazy to me.

Plenty of people have come through though. Which comedian lost their job for saying something wrong that you think shouldn’t have?
Comedy festivals have bigger numbers performing at them, comedy shows gain bigger audiences than ever before, comedians get paid more, there are more independent comedy nights going.
At the Fringe this year I saw shows that covered a wide variety of topics. Who is stopped from performing because of what they say? Titania McGrath was sold out every night, for example.

And, Hicks and Carlin were repeatedly called out for the comedy and with Carlin and Bruce both were done for obscenity.

Charlie Murphy's ( Eddie Murphy's brother ) stories about Rick James are some of the funniest videos i've seen. Chappelle plays Rick James while Charlie tells the unbelievably funny stories about what a loon he was. Also the one about Charlie and his mates playing Prince and the Revolution at basketball is a classic. If you aint seen, you gots to.

The story of how those sketches came about is brilliant too.

This is a well-known issue. The modern 'progressive' Left has replaced the Mary Whitehouse Christian Right brigade. The Offence-ometer has politically turned 180°.

If you are genuinely unaware, here's some mainstream discussion on it from the last 12 months:
