It allows us to switch to a 442 off the ball and I think if you look at the Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea/Man United games at the end of the season you see the value of it. Having Sigurdsson pressing high up almost as though he was a striker while our wide men dropped a little deeper than usual to restrict the space of their wide men. I thought it was very similar to the way Simeone organises his Atlético side to press and I’d regard them as one of the best sides about at doing that.
The point of a press is to be as high up the field as possible when winning the ball back and transitioning into the attack from that position. All of which you can't do effectively in a 433 when the wingers drop back to a 442. The high press becomes useless at that point as the transition is slow taking away all the advantage in starting the attack while the defense is transitioning.

A major component of today's high press is applying pressure to the fullbacks and deepest CM as most teams attempt to play out of the back now and those 2 positions are where the ball is moved through 95% of the time. It's up to our fullbacks to press their wingers and will be in that position most of the time due to having very advanced fullbacks.

Atletico definitely do use the 442 well but one of the major complaints in Simeone's play style is that its very defensive and requires a lot of grinding to move the team up the field. They are also a very aging team that doesn't move up and down the field a lot so they are almost forced to play that way.

We're going to just smash everyone on the counter attack mate.

Not convinced on Jean-Philippe Gbamin, but Brand's hasn't signed anyone who is AWFUL yet. So there is no way he should be wrote off yet. I think he will be too psychical but that's not always a bad thing.

Agree, looking at his youtube clip he doesnt look that great but Brands has bought quality so far.

....so Transfer rumours can be accurate, linked with Kean for months.
We were linked with both Digne and Mina for a while too before the deals were finally sorted. Zouma and Gomes came out of the blue though, possibly because they were loan deals. Maybe we'll find something similar this summer as we get closer to deadline day. I can see that right back from Atletico coming on loan, perhaps with an option to buy next summer.

Hope I'm wrong.

Despite the increase in goals last year we got needlessly ripped apart, often by bang average teams.
And it gets down to his approach.
Its not going to get you into the top 4.

It took him far too long in the season to replace Richarlison with Walcott (a no brainer)
Yet he's talking about liking two diff types of wingers in Bernard and Richarlison.
Is he not making things up as he goes along.

He is implying he likes inverted wingers with overlapping fullbacks
yet also wants to play a hybrid pressing-counter.
Thats chaos when trying to organise a midfield defence.
With Gana gone and if he continues that way it'll be at least another half a season down the drain.

Much prefer getting a forward line which by its presence of talent and the way it moves, does either
1) creates the time and space for mids and fullbacks to play
or 2) is serious a threat from the counter
Either way you can plan a good defence around them while getting goals.
