And in truth, bottle it they did. Once again any negativity against them has been airbrushed from history.
They held a 10 point lead after the new year (City had a game in hand) and they blew it. They came to the Etihad and a win would have put them 10 points clear in total. The league would have been over and done with.
It was after that when Klopp started to be far more cautious. He genuinely did blow it against United. That game was there to take.Champions don't blow 10 point leads. They win the big games when they really have to.
They don't go all cautious at a crucial stage in the season. They simply couldn't get over the line and that is what
champions do. If City had blown a 10 point lead from that exact same position it would have been the biggest bottle job ever in the history of the Premier League. I made these points recently to a kopite I unfortunately met a party and he flounced off in a huff! So all the more reason to shout it from the roof tops...
I think it's a little more complex, but your point is a valid one. In most seasons, drawing at Old Trafford and Everton would be ok to win a league. Context is important though.
In truth I am not sure he could do much more with the Everton game. He was out thought tactically by Silva and Everton executed the game plan very well. We rode our luck a bit for the first 30 minutes but grew into the game. They had to hang in for (particularly) the last 15 minutes. I think he avoids going for that game as he can see there is only likely 1 winner and it isn't them. I actually think he played the game quite well from that perspective and it's not really a bottle job.
The game at Old Trafford was completely different though. United had just been outclassed by PSG and the wind was already coming out of the sails. They were in the midst of showing bottom 6 form. The day itself, they had to play over a half with effectively 10 men as Rashford couldn't run. They also had essentially a 2nd string 11 out. Look who was missing, from memory Jones, Valencia, Darmian, Matic, Herrera, Sanchez, Lingard, Mata, Martial all out injured as well as Rashford who was not fit. It was a a 2nd string side they had out, with young lads making up the numbers.
For me Klopp and Liverpool lost the plot that day. Far too cautious and not enough composure. I think he massively got into them at half time, and the were frenetic, rather than just tell them to be patient, keep moving the ball and United will start to tire and lose the will to compete. Instead they participated in a game that became like a cup tie and allowed a very very poor United team to prevent them from scoring.
That game, above all else will be the one they bottled it for me.
