He said that we shouldn't be signing players that are of midtable standard, and then went on to explain that top standard players can play at midtable clubs, like Lukaku at Everton. There is nothing wrong with the point that he is making, which is that we need to sign players that are capable of playing at the top level if we actually want to progress to the top level. He wasn't expressing an aversion to signing players from midtable clubs, but was expressing an aversion to players that are midtable standard.
