Maradona was the best ... maradona carried average players - Messi can't do that. Ronaldo and Messi aren't comparable either IMO, I prefer Messi as a player, Ronaldo is a better athlete and has more will to win but ultimately neither are close to Diego.

Barcelona need to completely rethink their model for the next three years if Messi is going to still be their focal point. You can´t have a team that lacks so much intensity in games like last night. It´ll only ever end in one way.

Surround this version of Messi with runners and players with an overwhelming desire to win and he´d still be the best player on the pitch. Place him in a team like last night and it´s pointless. The Coutinho signing looks more and more baffling by the week, up there with us buying 3 number 10s in a single summer.

They had the right idea with Suarez, but he looks finished now, and they obviously thought that Coutinho was going to be a direct replacement for Neymar, only for it to turn out to be a disaster.

Arthur looked good when he came on, so I'm not sure why Rakitic was left to stink the place out for as long as he did, but the most baffling thing was Valverde having to make the same substitution at right-back two games in a row. Unforgivable that.

No way Ronaldo playing in that average team would have lost by 4 goals. Messi just hasn't got the temperament to lift himself or players around him when the going gets tough.

He didn't want to know when things started to go very wrong for Barca last night. At least Ronaldo will always dig in when the chips are down and got Madrid out of a few holes particulary in Europe, that's why I prefer Ronaldo over Messi anyday of the week.

Not done too much at international level either. Great player but bit of a flat track bully for me.

Apart from owt else, we know Maradona plied his trade in an era when grocks were able to scythe him down at will....when they could get near him.

So we will take it as read he would have been even better these days, when defenders cannot just klick lumps out of a player.

Messi has never had to face the likes of the Butcher of Bilbao (I cannot spell his real name ), Marco Tardelli and their ilk,

So will never know how he would have fared.

I suppose it is fair to say that accurately comparing Messi and Ronaldo with Pele and Diego is really impossible, given how much defenders have been neutered since the latter two were at their peak,

I'm not bothered about Ronaldo... like I said he nor Messi are close to Maradona.

The whole Messi vs Ronaldo fanboy thing is just bizarre.... a debate for fans who never got to see maradona. Messi is the footballer Ronaldo the athlete... obviously both talented beyond belief but not even near Maradona.
