OK, so what I mean is, the character has been thrust into a role for which he’s evidently not suitable, and his potential for gaffs has greatly increased. The way in which he’s going about fulfilling said role leads to those gaffs being made. The Partridge character is almost entirely meant to be funny because he lacks self awareness and his inability to see that and fulfill the role as intended by his bosses is essentially the joke.

He’s getting more out of his depth with each episode and is responding in the only way he knows how, by trying to be a smart arse and putting everyone around him down.
