The problem I have with the objective stats argument, is that we haven't really defined the metric that shows that gueye is a great midfielder.
Sure, he has the most tackles, but if you look at the list you see most of the midfielders on the list are from rubbish teams. None of the top 20 midfielders play for top 6 clubs.
Now that obviously tells me one obvious thing: that players from bad teams probably make more tackles.
But if you're a central midfielder playing for a team with top 6 aspirations, I'd be suspicious of you BECAUSE you were making so many tackles. Great defensive central midfielder play is as much about positioning and ball retention as it is about tackles.
So if you're the "best" centre mid in a terrible midfield in terms of tackles, are you free of responsibility for the rest of the teams play?
