Silva's usual system at Watford was with Capoue and Doucoure together as twice DMs/CMs. He doesn't even have that alterative here. It would also suit this team better. He did have Calvalho as a single DM at Sporting, but that's a very different role and player than Gana. It would explain the Wilmar Barrios shout, although I'm not sure he's good enough for the PL.

Right now, our lack of legit personnel in the middle is killing Marco's ability to compete tactically with other clubs. Simple as that.

When teams pack it in against us, or play a medium block - look at exactly what West Ham did today against Arsenal - we have to be able to attack out wide and push the line back. Right now, we do that, we give the ball up WAY too often and we are dead on the counter, which is the OPPOSITE of what SHOULD happen, but our right side just stinks or at least is too risky. Playing two DMs - really two box to box players - that can run would allow us to properly support the wide attacks and not leave us too open on the counter. I would argue that is Silva's preferred tactic, but we simply don't have the players to run it.

You give this team a Doucoure type to play alongside Gana, you can push Gomes into more of the pivot role instead of Siggy at times, you even play Siggy as an inside forward instead of Walcott, move Bernard over to the right, keep Richy up top, move Siggy/Lookman there, etc.

Silva right now has no backup 10, no backup 8 (sorry, Davies), no backup 6, and no depth in CM to vary tactics at all. Thus, we are stuck with Siggy at 10, Gomes at 8, Gana at 6. And that's okay, but they are going to run out of steam (already have) and we have no ability to vary tactics at all. The only variant Silva has is playing fewer centeral mids. We've seen the 4-4-2 with Sigurdsson and Gomes. There's just no tackle or speed there.

So to me, Brands moving Gana would kill this team, because there is no way he's then getting 2 CMs/DMs back in.

Agree with all you mention, there is simply too much to do - We will improve, but people suggesting this squad can/should achieve a respectable finish/cup run need to acknowledge how much is presently needing to be put right.

That being said, I feel we are slowly heading in the right direction.

Time and patience needed.

Gana + Gomes + Sigurdsson is not ok. It doesnt work at all...also youre saying we dont have a backup 10 ? Lookman / Bernard and even Dowell and Vlasic can all be tried there, my preference is lookman.

However, we shouldnt be playing with a 10. We should be playing with a deep DM and 2 box to box CMs. Exactly what Silva has done before.

Its pretty clear that playing that type of system nullifies Sigurdsson...that would bring back the 10 position to having 2 number 8s which would be Gomes + 1.

If we sold Gana and signed a DM ball player that wouldnt currently work either as we would have no player to screen there (unless the new player could do both).

The logical move would be to sell Gana/Sigurdsson and whoever is sold first is replaced by a powerful midfielder like Doucoure / Sangare / Ndombele etc etc. They can play alongside Gomes for the rest of the season.

When the next player is sold we then go for the DM who can screen defence and ping the ball around...either the busquets or pirlo type whose covered by the 2 CMs as well coming back.

Simply looking to play Gana as a ball winner alongside a box to box midfielder long term is far too defensive imo...

Id say a Portuguese pairing of Fernandes / Gomes or a monster pair of Doucoure/Sangare or a mix, with someone behind the pair would be very exciting indeed.

Would you not prefer seeing that type of midfield than what we have now?

Thats spot on....im not fussed too much on position this season, theres too many ins/outs needed.

What i would say is that if we put a tick next to each position filled in the 11 we still have 6 places to tick off.

I would hope that with some sales (fingers crossed) this window we would be able to bring in 2 players to tick off 2 positions which leaves us less to do in summer and players can bed in.

We should try to be stronger each window.

Be positive...i think Tosun and Niasse will be sold. Schneiderlin too if we subsidise his wages.

For the same reasons alot of other posters would.

:( i have feelings too

I think its a bit harsh now to play that record as a lot of other posters feel the same as me about Gana.

For what its worth youre suggesting playing an 8 who can also sit alongside Gana. This would be a waste of a player and very negative...we should be playing one DM and 2 CMs as per Silvas usual system.

I think we will be surprised at who we go for.

Have some faith in your namesake.
As I say mate, I very much like you. Just sometimes you're a dog with a bone is all.

Niasse will defo leave this window, if he goes we are stronger.

Maxi Gomez has a release clause of about €40mil.

Werner isnt extending his 2020 contract and rumoured to be available at €40mil.

Thats just 2 players we we could go for who are light years ahead of Batshuayi....we make a huge number of crosses into the box and both those forwards can head the ball, Gomez especially

I dont think adding money onto fees received is an issue...as we would be saving with wages.
Do you honestly think we could attract Werner?

Like honestly?

I want us to be stronger each window were opportunities arise - but with so much dead wood on big wages we are stuck.

As you say, if wages/space are freed up I’m sure there’s money available to purchase should a target become available. However I don’t think a target will become available in the window, unless they are surplus to requirements and wanting to push a move through.

Again it just comes down to patience as we know we are not going to offload the dirge we have when they are on big wages. The hope would be as mentioned by a few - a few teams get desperate and are forced into taking a chance on some of the non-contributors we have.

Thats it sadly, its alright Zat saying "sell him, buy them", not having a pop at Zat like, but its really not as easy as we think.

We have really rubbish players that we paid biggish money for, who are on disgusting wages, the wages limit the type of clubs we can sell them to sadly. Only really Premier League clubs can afford these wages and the type of clubs desperate enough to buy dont wanna be stuck with a player earning 80-120k a week if theres a chance they wont be a Premier League team next season.

I mean it seemed like Steve Walshs idea of signing players was to just offer the clubs the money they wanted and agree to the first wage demands every Agent made.

Brands wants to do it differently, he will tell clubs what we want to pay, I mean sure it will mean we miss out on a few targets here and there, but there are plenty of quality players around, so I cant see it being much of an issue.

It depends on what motivates the player.

I think we may be surprised by our dealings...

Thats exactly right, now is the time teams are desperate and i would like to see us take advantage of this fully.

Walcott, Coleman etc...we could be seeing a surprise sale which if we can do without them for the rest of the season would be beneficial to us looking further than the short term.
