Transfer Rumour Michy Batshuayi

I mean... on a loan I'd be good with it, but I'd be surprised if he turned out to be any good with us. Ever since he moved to Chelsea he's never looked like pulling up any trees since.

I'd be inclined to trust Brands on this though I suppose. Hopeful that any player that walks through the door now would've been fully vetted to ensure they fit the 'profile' for Silva.

....it’s silly money now, Bernie. I used to say two contracts for a Premier League player sets them up for life, but it’s probably one contract these days. The youngsters at our club will be rich beyond belief, they live in a totally different world.

Regarding character, the question I always ask in respect of any transfer is, do they play like the game matters to them?

Amazingly simple question but what an important one. Sadly it's difficult to answer 'yes' for so many players.

If we move Niasse (and possibly even Tosun as well) on for decent money and brought Batshuayi in for circa £20-ish million I'd be happy enough with that. Him, Richarlison & DCL for the rest of the season should be sufficient.

It’s probably not even the transfer fee for this one. We have Tosun and Niasse probably on decent wages. Batshuayi might accept middling wages for the promise of first team football and we could potentially shift the likes of the two above and Sandro off the wage bill.

It's a bit of a punt, but I'd be pleased. I don't know what happened at Valencia, but he never got a proper chance at Chelsea.

He's bagged 12 goals in 22 games for Belgium, so that's something...

Given that there were rumours around Origi, perhaps the profile of striker we are looking for is a quick strong mobile one who can play upfront by himself. Something Tosun nor Niasse really is.

Just watched a couple of YouTube comps of his goals from Chelsea and Dortmund. Yeah I know, I know...

Anyway, I suspect he'll get the flak Rom and Yak did - lazy, doesn't work for the team. However, he just sniffs around the box. Right time right place. Looks to gamble on balls across the six yard box - What we all moan about DCL and Tosun for not doing.

YouTube though, so partial picture. Thoughts?

He's undeniably better than Tosun and Niasse - you won't find me disagreeing with that.

If he's available for less than £20m, it's also a very good price.

Number of reservations though

  1. He's a Chelsea player, that almost certainly means he's on a big, fat contract and it was only earlier this week that our owner said our focus will be on getting the wage bill down and investing in younger players on lower wages, even if it means big transfer fees.
  2. He did well at Dortmund last season, but that's a team who create lots of chances. Batshuayi is a decent finisher and is relatively quick and ok with his back to goal, but he isn't the kind of player who is going to pull defences all over the show with his movement to create space for himself or others, nor is he individually gifted enough to create opportunities for himself. I worry he'll need service to thrive here and we aren't exactly blessed with an abundance of creative talent - this Everton side creates less opportunities than a Tory government.
  3. Whilst he's undeniably better than what we have, we said the same thing a year ago about Walcott and Tosun. They were better than what we had at the time, but there's now a consensus that we need better than them if we want to progress, yet shifting them is another matter because of the size of the contracts they are on. I worry we'd quickly end up in the same place with Batshuayi - given he probably earns good money at Chelsea, it's unlikely he's going to take a pay cut to come here, so getting a player on £100k or so per week off the wage bill is no easy thing.
  4. It screams "7th place" to me. There's no way he's good enough to start for any of the top 6 teams, so it's a "best of the rest" signing. If that's where our immediate aspirations are, then fine, but given the difficulty in shifting high-earning players, people should recognise that even they see him as a stop-gap signing, he'll be here a while.

Not many do. I know if I got paid what they did to do my job I’d likely do the bare minimum to keep myself in the job.
