2018/19 Kieran Dowell

...it’s going to be difficult for him to get game time, which is why he needed to make an impression on Tuesday. Not sure what position he played on his debut but he was a regular right sided midfielder in those days. I still think the club missed a trick not keeping him here last season. Before Walcott joined in January, we only had Aaron Lennon as an option, Dowell would’ve provided what we were lacking (creativity and goals), plus a well established partnership with Kenny.

We’d have found out what we needed to know about the lad but it’s going to be difficult now.
He started off on the right in a 433 formation. Barry, McCarthy and Davies were in midfield. When we were 3-0 up shortly after half time, we brought Lennon on for McCarthy and he moved into a more central role. He played very well considering it was his premier debut, but I think the game as a whole was a breath of fresh air given the players had previously stopped playing for Martinez.

You make it sound so easy Nymz. ever thought of taking up coaching?

In fairness, the lad has probably played not much more than a total of 200 minutes spread out over 4 years for the first team. We've seen him do magic at youth level and in the championship, and in pre season for us too, so we know its in his locker.

That's why I suggested trying him in a slightly deeper role in the middle where he'll be in the thick of things. he'd need somebody like Gana alongside him though.

We should have taken the opportunity against Southampton to try him there. He won't get the chance now unless we have another spate of injuries, especially after the stick Silva got following the cup exit.

Someone's woken up in a grump today.

He's played several times for the first team this season now and he hasn't made one telling contribution. I like that lad, think he's got a unique talent, I just want him to do more with the chances he's given. Lack of appearances are due to him not taking his previous chances.

But yes, I should coach, I think I could manage a title winning team.

Several timeslol

Two starts in the League cup, subbed at half time in one of them.

I agree he's not taken his chances this season. His previous chances, which you refer to, consist of a substitute appearance in a dead rubber Europa tie one month after his 17th birthday, and his premier debut against Norwich as an 18yo in which the BBC named him MOTM.

He needs a run of games...which he won't get...before we can begin to get an idea if he'll make the grade.
*shrugs* 'ked if I know...nor do many others
As you say, he won't get that run of games he needs, barring another injury crisis in midfield.

I'd send him on loan in January and try and find a willing club in Germany or Italy.

Pressure is so high on managers these days, they won't risk giving young players extended runs to prove themselves...Unless you manage City.

Yeh thought he was great vs Norwich in which - from memory - he played deeper which is why I suggested he needed to get involved more and maybe change position.

I'd like to see what he could do in a flat midfield 3 which is where Davies flourished in his first full season with us. I'm not a massive fan of this fabled number 10 position.

Which is exactly what I said earlier when you accused me of being grumpylol

This lad isn't very good
He is for his age which is why he won a world cup medal less than 18 months ago and is a regular starter for England U21s.

Whether he'll ever be good enough for us or the premier league is something we're having a reasonable discussion about at the moment.
