Exactly
Back when I was playing and doing my coaching courses you were always told only one FB attacks and the opposite full back tucked in to cover the the 2CB who would have shifted over to the side of the pitch we were attacking
It’s like all 4 are on a piece of string and they all move together depending on where the ball is
The role of the full back has changed now though, it's not that we're not doing it right, that's just how the game is played now.

The second half against Fulham is the best 45 minutes I’ve seen from us in a very long time. It is all pointless however if we don’t build on it and use the win and the performance to push us forward.

But both ful backs high up the pitch leaves the 2 CB horribly exposed unless the DM does his job properly every time , and we’ve been caught out a few times this season
It may be the modern way but if it’s not working it has to be changed

That's how Silva plays. It puts a huge onus on our midfielders to be mobile, disciplined and tenacious, and also to look after the football and not leave us exposed by losing it in bad areas.

I don't think he's going to change his style so we need very athletic fullbacks who can bomb up and down all day, but also very well rounded footballers in midfield who are also athletes.

Just look at Guardiolas first season. He had sagna, zabaleta and clichy who were all well past their physical best. Then he spent 100m on full backs and 100 points later no one is criticising him anymore. Football has changed, and Silva plays the right way. But he needs time to get the correct personel to be able to do it effectively.
But in the meantime if he hasn’t got the players then surely he can’t play the same way

It’s not that simple though. The full backs being further up is actually part of the system, you can’t just keep all the bits you like and change the bits you don’t, because changing their positioning will have a knock on effect on the press, counter attack etc. I get what you’re saying, but There’s a bit more to it than you’re suggesting.

In a league where you can wait till you get the players you need and still compete that’s fine
I’m all for giving Silva 2 seasons but we haven’t got the players to play with 2 FBs pushed high up the pitch so he needs to compromise till he gets his players
When we a Keane/Viera type player then fair enough but till then he needs to utilise what he has and what he has can’t compensate for 2 FBs pushed high up the pitch

For now we are competing though? I agree that if we start losing every week he needs to park the vision and come up with a way of stopping the rot, but if we can get the results to get us 7th/8th while getting everybody playing the way we want to in the long term, why wouldn't we?

With a ready-made world class Chelsea team, so of course he could come into this Everton side and manage it to a trophy. I mean, they're the same.

Was with Utd mate if I remember correctly?

Sure he won Europa, FA and League cups.

He's doing poorly with a poor Utd side full of ego's. He isn't the Jose of old I agree but he's still a million miles better than Silva or any Everton manager of recent memory.

Time has caught up with him and he can`t accept it, so he finds players / journos / referees / other managers etc etc to blame and deflect from his own failings.

Unfortunately for him, football has moved on and he his tactics haven`t.

With the attacking talent in that Utd team, they should be playing fast, attacking, free flowing football, not the ten men behind the ball, grind them down stuff that he plays.

This concerns me too, and the only way of really getting around it is by not turning over possession in midfield when the full backs have pushed up.

We need someone in the middle of the park who'll make opposing midfielders drop a few more yards. As it stands I reckon teams know that when Gana is on the ball he poses little offensive threat and it makes us susceptible to a turnover & subsequent counter. We need a quality ball-carrier who'll never lose the thing and will knock it into the forwards 99.9% of the time.
Like Gomez?
