We missed I-G-G massively on Saturday. His energy was sadly lacking.

I just cannot stand 4-2-3-1 to the point I hate it.

Sigurdsson could have played centrally with Schneiderlin on Saturday with Lookman one side & Walcott on the other. DCL & Tosun up top. It was Huddersfield ffs.

Sigurdsson is a VERY good footballer & captain of his national team.

One day, just one day, we’ll go 4-4-2. Tosun & DCL can both head a ball & have physicality ...... let’s use what we have.

Not rocket science.

Plus DCL has pace to burn it seems, so it could work.

Osman was a better footballer than any of our current midfielders. When he played in the middle we played well.
That’s was one of the biggest problems for Moyes. He had Cahill in the 10 role so osman was stuck on the wing fir years. And that didn’t suit him as he was slow and not very strong. Probably had his best few years once Cahill left and he played more centrally.

Name a top team that plays 442?

...Gareth Barry was a class central midfielder, no doubt about that. I thought so anyway.

Very underated not just by clubs but the national side too. Got better with age as well 28 when he went to city ( take note Davis haters) The absence of Barry or similar was the difference in England not getting to the final in the summer.

Leicester won the league playing 4-4-2 just as few seasons ago. And dont come back with the game has changed rubbish they everyone spouts, there are still 10 outfield players and 4-4-2 has always been effective. Accept that it cant be used all the time and that's where there managers should earn there money. 4-4-2 would have been the perfect formation to play on Saturday given the injuries and suspensions we had. And this is in no way knocking Silva, really like him so far.

I think that this team will look vastly different with Gana and Gomes in the midfield.

Right now its the position we have the least depth at, so if we have an injury or two its down to the dregs.

Because there is a longstanding opinion within the club that energy and tackling are the most important traits for a midfielder. It's ingrained within our youth coaches and large elements of our support. We haven't one good midfielder. Not one of them is productive with the ball at their feet. It's safe and has no threat.

It`s not just us it`s ingrained in virtually every single club in the Premier League.

Players like Gasgoine simply wouldn`t be allowed to exist now days and would have to play to a system, rather than being allowed to be an individual.

It`s all about pace and athleticism now, over skill and creativity.

This team is crying out for Arteta in the middle of the park. The midfield is so dull. Even Gueye who is really good at what he does isn't great to watch.
