2018/19 Kieran Dowell

It's difficult because the things he needs to learn, how to impose himself on a game, can only be learnt by playing for a decent spell and at quite a high level. He would really benefit from a midfield injury crisis - a run of five games where there is no one waiting in the wings to push him out of the team. Bit weird for something to rely on fate like that but I actually think it's probably the case for quite a lot of young players. Think Rashford who was by no means 'knocking on the door' at United when he got into the team initially.

..glad most folk liked what they saw. I don’t think he’s ever going to be an all action midfielder, always in the game but he has that bit of quality that can make the difference in football matches. He’s capable of putting the most exquisitely weighted passes behind the opposition back four that could really benefit a speedy central striker, winger or overlapping full back.

You are all sadly trying so hard to see something in the lad that really isnt there.

Mark my words, he will not be making it here, not unless we get relegated anytime soon.

Went last night and paid particular attention to Dowell seeing as we are both from Ormskirk.

What a strange player.

He clearly has good technique with a good 1st touch ( watch and learn Oumar) and can pick a pass but is so one footed it is ridiculous for a pro footballer. Far too lightweight to play centre midfield and doesn't seem to have any devil in him.

You would struggle to play him wide because he has no pace.

Could he play off a striker ? Maybe but not convinced.

I honestly don't know how you would accomodate him in a succesful team.

I think its a weird one with Dowell, he clearly has talent but at the moment I think he is in between the Championship and Premier League in terms of quality.

Too good for the Championship, not quite good enough to start in the Premier League (which I think will come eventually).

Encouraged with what I see of him last night though, him and Davies did well in a two man midfield.

whilst I agree he is one footed, but look at a certain gareth barry a prem winner, he was so left footed also

I think dowell needs to find a position, he doesn't track enough to be a CM for me, he is a bit slow for a "winger" so that leaves the number 10 role just behind the striker, think it's perfect for him, he's like a jarg version of ozil, same style

I thought the Ormskirk Ozil thing was a joke but I can see where the comparisons come from.
Both are left footed , languid in possesion and neither look like they are trying.

Silva will be a good manager for his development I think but playing infrequently that will surely be stunted to some degree.

I can see why he wasn't sent on loan again but the odd cup and substitute appearance is not going to be great for him, and puts added pressure on in the games he will get to start.

It may have been better to bite the bullet for the longer term and give him another year in The Championship.

He clearly has the technical ability, just needs to be managed and developed in the right way over the next year especially.

Bit unnerved by @davek's positive attitude in this thread if I'm honest, will probably swerve the thread from now on as I find it too disturbing.
If players have quality then I'm enthused and I back them: Deulofeu, Barkley, Dowell etc. The rest: I could have done what they do. Just athletes. And while very good athletes who can play in an acceptable manner, why hand them loads of plaudits?

He has that time because he's in plenty of space when receiving. Seems ages ago when he had his debut. In fact it was. He needs to be given his chance this season.
Well pick my 10 chins up off the floor our man Dave there see the positive in a young player .Go ead mate you be cheering when we score next

..no pace, one footed, can’t tackle - sounds lots like Kevin Sheedy and he just about managed.
