If he adds defensive cohesion on set pieces alone AND retains the attacking prowess of Martinez's teams then we are onto a winner.

It;s a tall order though. To be defensively solid we have to have proper defenders. At a minimum that means Baines, Jagielka, Keane being nowhere near an Everton starting line up, and longer term Coleman being phased out for a RB who can do what he does AND be positionally aware as a defender...something he isn't.

We our years away from defensive 'soundness', because we are years away from getting shut of the defensively weak defenders. Hopefully Digne, Mina and Zouma are integrated quickly and decisively and that Holgate continues his development.

Martinez's biggest strength and weakness was his unwavering commitment to his style, when really all that was needed here and there were a few tweaks and the realisation that a switch in coaching staff may well have helped.
