..he returned early for training this summer and, unlike others he’s carried injuries and still played so I think he’s a good professional. I imagine he’ll accept the situation, so much will depend on the player himself and whether he wants to see out his last couple of seasons on the pitch.

I doubt the club will stand in his way, although the weekend rumours suggest Antonee Robinson would be allowed to go on loan so back-up will need to be resolved. Connolly is versatile and Gibson is highly thought of but has been playing CB.

average is a step up from baines? thought he was quality when he came back last season, no where near as good as his peak around 09-14 but cant be expected to be really

It upsets me I have to agree with this. I honestly think he's done as a first team option. I love Baines and he's been a top servant to the club, so this brings me no joy to say this. defensively he's always been poor and now he hasn't got the legs to get up and down and (especially in this system) it leaves us exposed on the left flank. He never stops the cross and the amount of times he just let's a player run right past him, like for lukakus goal at old Trafford last season.

Attacking wise he seems to be sluggish on the ball for me. Holding onto balls that back in the day he would of hit first time for a cross. Maybe its just because he's awear he is that if he looses the ball and a counter comes from it he can't get back.

I lost my faith in him as our starting left back last season away at Huddersfield he was terrible and not only that but he looked lazy. Which is something I thought I'd never see from him. Just walking out to try to stop a cross, letting men run of him and just terrible passing.

I just think that he needs to be back up and he needs to play on a full tank. Should play a maximum of 15-20 games next season for me and that would he cup runs (fingers crossed) and cover for injurys (again fingers crossed). This isnt taking away from what baines has done for this club or how good hes been. This is based on a footballer who is reaching the end of his career and should be used as such. Not over exposing him and sullying our memories of his time at everton.

Bring in a great replacement for him now, and let Baines provide the RB cover, if needed

They think anyone who isn’t Messi is average. The few times I’ve seen him play he looks a competent full back who is sound defensively and technically good on the ball so can join in with attacks and build the play.

That is a far better option than a slow weak Baines who still bombs on like he’s 25 leaving half our backline exposed.

I have got no doubt that he’s competent and better than Baines right now which was why I said in my first post (which you quoted) if he’s average he’s better than what we have.

I know that's what worries me. I've seen it too many times with everton. In the past it couldn't be helped because we couldn't afford a replacement. This time it's just incompetence.

Roma fans rated him highly, which is much more indicative of how useful he'll be to us than people comparing him to megastars.

Spurs fans thought Pienaar was rubbish, different clubs, different styles of play. Just have to hope he has been chosen because he'll fit in with the style we are looking to transition to.
