Joey goes Turkey strutting

Greetings from the great, old country of Turkey. I'm a big time fan of Fenerbahce SK and im pretty pleased with this latest move, though Fenerbahce seems the strongest in defence in Turkish league standards. Turkish international Demirel is a quality goalkeeper, Gonul is the best right-back of this country and Andre Santos occasionally plays for Brazil as a left back. Yobo and the Uruguay captain Lugano seem to make up a solid defensive backline as Yobo has what Lugano lacks; pace. The fact that he played in a quality Everton side for 8 consecutive years surely speaks for his quality. About how he might have been tempted for a move to Turkey, here is some facts and theories:

In his first interview to the Turkish press, Yobo reminded us a game I almost forgot. About 4 or 5 years ago Everton was our guest in Turkey for a pre-season friendly game. Yobo commented on the fans in the stadium that day, saying he hasn't yet forgotten the atmosphere in the stadium.

From all your posts, I get the feeling that Yobo's game has been mostly appreciated by fans. It should be a difficult task to ask such a player to wait for a first team chance in the bench. That's why I don't believe Moyes was left with much choices when Yobo told him he wants to play or leave. It's not like he's 35 years old, he still has a couple of years ahead to play quality football. Another thing that might have tempted him is that the stars of the previous generation of Nigeria such as Jay Jay Okocha and Uche played for Fenerbahce for some long years.

And an interesting detail: Our vice captain Emre Belozoglu was accused of racist behaviour against Yobo when he was playing for Newcastle. In the discipline commitee it was Yobo's report that cleared Emre's reputation. When asked about that event today, Yobo sticked to his first comments, and said he and Emre are good friends. Just to make things clear, it is worth noting that Turkish football history had few events involving racism. In the Kevin Campbell case, Trabzonspor chairman was just trying to be funny but if you're an idiot, crossing the line is just a matter of seconds. (For those who are curious, Chairman Sahin commented "We purchased our cannibal player as a goal scoring machine but he turned out to be a washing machine") How pathetic. Yet, besides this unfortunate event I remember no other bad memories. If there's anything as racism in Turkey non-caucasians are last to be targeted. Maybe against Greeks and Aermanians but still I wouldn't call that racism, it doesn't go that far; it's just rivalry with some nationalits feelings in it :D

welcome mate, interesting to hear your point of view, do you believe Yobo will start every game for you?

Come back after a few games fella

In Joseph Yobo's defence (ha! and ours, for a few years): He has been a fine player capable of playing really well. With the trouble he has had, first with his brother's kidnap, then his injuries, then fighting to get back into the side (obviously not easy after the arrival of Heitinga and Distin) with no opportunity to recover his match fitness it can't have been easy. This latest episode where his brother (another one?) was mugged was probably the last straw. An honest pro who didn't let us down - his proclivity for the long ball probably a legacy of the earlier, less attractive Everton sides he frequented. It's quite reasonable to assume that, playing for a good side where they are likely to do well (and control most of the games they play in), it will not do him any harm at all.

So, as I said before: All the best and maybe we'll see Fenerbahce at Goodison for a farewell-friendly come next August!

Very good read. I hope he's good for you, you're good for him, and we can get some much needed cash at the end of it all.

I'll miss him though.

And to that James fella, Yobo DOES have pace. Not Distin, 40 mph "oh [Poor language removed] he's going to trample me" pace, but for a CB he's no slouch.

welcome mate, interesting to hear your point of view, do you believe Yobo will start every game for you?

Thanks mate, it already feels good to be here :)
Well he has to start. One thing I've noticed this season is that players we purchased from EPL and French League 1 are physically superior to those who spent the pre-season period in Turkey. (We purchased Niang and Dia from France, Stoch and Yobo from England) So in these early period of the new season, I believe Yobo will find enough chances to establish himself as a regular. The stupid thing is that we have a ridiculous rule here: clubs can sign up to 10 foreign players but only 6 of them can be on the field. Yobo is our 10th foreigner now and this may force our manager to some compulsory rotations in the squad from time to time. Yobo's chance is that his alternative is also a foreigner, a low-profile Brazilian Fabio Bilica. So we can rule out Bilica and Güiza and see it as if we have only 8 foreigners in the squad.

I don't mean to cause any upsets, but our board is keeping the budget very tight this season. for this reason, the 5M £ of future fee seems kindda problematic to me. We might still want to keep Yobo towards the end of the season but I don't see it happening smoothly as "here is 5 millions", I predict some harsh negotiations on the horizon.

I have to add; the way English fans and Turkish fans discuss football are very different and if I had to make a choice, things seem to be going much better here in this forum. If any of you guys would like to ask any questions about Turkish football like betting tips and stuff I'd be pleased to try and add something to the discussion.

Yeah your right he's got real pace.. Shame as soon as he get there he just hoofs it...

Tbh not bothered on your opinion just telling him that there was a reason that Yobo was our 4th choice

Welcome to the board mate, get some sunglasses and a neck brace - you'll be looking up to the sky a lot!

Chill out mate. I didn't mention anything about his hoofing, I just said he has some pace, which you implied he didn't.

And for the record, our worst hoofer is by far Jags. But as per usual, the great Nikodem is banned from criticism.

Good to hear from you, FF. Please do come back from time to time to keep us posted on Joseph's progress/performances.

Yea sure thing. It just a shame for us that we won't be playing many big games this season as we first failed to qualify for CL and then to Europa League. 3 weeks from now on, we have a game against Besiktas and if he starts that game I'll be able to watch him against Quaresma and Guti. Evaulating Yobo's game would be more efficient than. But that always hoofing the ball thing worried me a bit tbh :D Yet, when i think about the goals we conceeded against Young Boys and PAOK, hoofing is still something. Against both teams we conceeded when our defenders were desperately running after the scorer or because we failed to dominate aerially in defence. If Joseph can cure our aerial and pace related problems at the back, our other 3 defenders have quite a technical ability to help him with the rest.

Yobo is much worse than Jags.

Jags at least looks for a pass, then hoofs it. Joey hoofs it. Under no pressure, he hoofs it. I hate this. Why does he do it? He could be an excellent player, he just needs to get back on his game, AND STOP HOOFING IT!

I don't care where Jags looks, just where the ball ends up. And from the pair of them, it never ends up anywhere productive.

But at least Yobo hoofs it pronto. He doesn't sit with it for 10 minutes, look into the distance, shuffle to his left and then proceed in handing it back to the opposition.

I know Jags is a hoofer, he can't pass. It's easier to overlook though because he's a better defender. Joey has being playing [Poor language removed], and is at least as bad a hoofer as Jags is. I hope he does well in Turkey, but I dont want him back
