David Unsworth

It's time for him to go out into the management world and cut his teeth. That run he had as interim was very uncomfortable, I was terrified we could actually go down and the players didn't respond to him at all apart from the last game against West Ham.

Not that it was any of his fault really, what can any man do with a squad that was in such a state like ours was/is?

Fact is though he's no way near ready to be a Premier League management but his success with our kids shows that's he clearly got something to build on.

Agree to disagree. I felt Unsworth worked out the system that got us the wins (with Rooney in midfield as the creator). Once we abandoned it we've gone back to being as bad as Koeman's team.
We got beat 5-1 by Atalanta and 4-1 by Southampton in two of his last three games. I don’t know what you think he worked out, but it certainly wasn’t how to save us from the drop.

I think this will be good for him, he needs a prolonged stay away from what has become quite a comfort zone for him withing the U23s. To be clear there's nothing wrong with a manager finding somewhere he's very settled but a manager who is going to get to the top you do feel they need to prove themselves and then prove themselves all over again when they move to a different club. It's why I have reservations over somebody like Eddy Howe, he's done brilliantly for Bournemouth but when the time came for him to move up the ladder it didn't go very well at Burnley. However he obviously went back to Bournemouth and done brilliantly for a second time so you question whether he's a one club only man.

Unsworth has the potential to be a good manager but in my opinion he needs to get away from Everton for a bit (as much as our U23's will miss him) and earn his stripes the hard way. As well as he's done for the youth setup there just isn't the same pressures as with senior football so I hope he gets this role or one similar to it and grasps it with both hands.

no chance, we'd have more points now if we'd stuck with him instead of hiring the mess we have now. plus we'd have got rid of schnederlin at start of january
Nothing Unsworth did suggested he could turn this around. NOTHING.

Also, and in no way am I defending Fat Sam here, his fixtures were nowhere near as hard.

If he goes wish him all the success in the world, stepped in when it wasn't possible to get it right, we were sinking, and he did his best to steady it, I even think sams early success was a lot to do with Rhino

This would be a good club for him and players would buy into the philosophy rather than go off playing crossbar challenge. :coffee:

Good luck to him, he's great for our U23's but that league is only there for kids, reserves and returning injuries so it's not the end of the world if we aren't winning it for a while.

Good Morning and thanks for allowing me registration.

Strong rumours down here and on the betting exchanges that he's in line to be our (Oxford's) next manager.

Would fit our approach as we are a club renowned for bringing on young players and having success that way. We've taken Jonjoe from you along with Ryan Ledson & Conor McAleny so he would be know to our club and our chairman. Dave Jones who works for Sky is also on our board so maybe a link that way?
Well worth the risk, tbh, I wondered how long he'd stay and he'll be a hard act to follow in the U23s

Serious?

CHELSEA (A)
LEICESTER (A) their new manager’s first game in charge
LYON (A)
WATFORD (H)

Those games were all a few days apart

Then

PALACE (A) who were on an upturn
ATLANTA (H)
SOUTHAMPTON (A)
WEST HAM (H)

Again those games all a few days apart. We beat Watford and West Ham at home and drew to Palace away. It looked worse cos of the Atlanta and Southampton game being so close and highly publicised (both on TV) hidings. But he seemed to have ditched the poor and found a good balance for the West Ham game.

Compare that to

HUDDERSFIELD (H)
LIMASSOL (A)
RS (A)
NEWCASTLE (A)
SWANSEA (A)
CHELSEA (H)
WBA (A)
BOURNEMOUTH (A)

That’s 8 games each. He played 4 relegation candidates in that time and a very poor Cypriot side in a dead rubber. We barely had a shot on target in most of those games!

Obvious to anyone Unsworth had a much more difficult fixture list than the fat fraud.

Agreed.
I think David Unsworth is great and would be sad to lose him.
However I am not sure that he has what it takes to manage at senior level.

He came into a disastrous situation , but was not able to do anything about it.

I think the win against West Ham could be included as part of new manager bounce.

This is another massive casualty of the Sam Hammam MkII era, have no doubt about that.

We have lost here a man who has been key to the development of our youngsters and got many through to the first team. That's come about because he was handed a ridiculous poison chalice of trying to get a first team shot of confidence back up the league (which he succeeded in doing, btw) without ever being given the credibility of named full time manager.

The general perception is that he has lost face now and needs to go out to prove himself as manager and that's what he's doing. Our best interests however were served better by him staying here in his role at the Academy, but the upset caused by making him PT first team manager has wrecked that.

An utter shambles this season has turned out to be.

Unsworth set out the game plan for that match. Have you EVER seen us play like that under this cave man in the dug out right now?

You’ve made excuses for all of Unsworth’s failing there. I was there, I sat through Unsworth’s football and he was taking us down.
