The sort of signing Villa/West Ham/Sunderland would have made in their rich period.

Still having old, unsaleable players, on huge wages worked out well for them so why not us?
I suppose as long as you don't give them a five-year contract it's alright, isn't it? If you're expecting them to make an immediate impact and help move you up the league? If we sign Walcott on a three-year deal to take him until he is 31 going on 32 I'd not see a problem in that at all. Yes there is little to no resale value, but it's not always about that. Will United have resale value in signing Sanchez for the 60m+ it'll take them when you take into account his fee, signing fee and fee to his agent?

I'd imagine this will be a three-and-a-half year deal.

Mourinho said that he never had a problem signing player in the 29-31 age bracket. You were getting a player at their peak and also with the experience of a decade of football behind them. Of course there is no resale value but then that was not an issue Mourinho had to worry about.

I think we need to come to terms with the reality that 20m is bargain basement price for a player at this level and you pay it or lose out.

I wonder at this price what the alternatives are... genuine alternatives.

As long as he's motivated I think he'll be good for us. I've never rated him particularly highly in terms of being a player for one of the big 4 teams - but he'll be pretty boss at our "best of the rest" type level I think. Definitely an improvement on what we have. I don't see how anyone could possibly argue otherwise.

28 is hardly old is it? He could reasonably go on for for 3-4 years and would still have a decent resale value during that period.

The fact is we have loads of good young players, unlike the clubs you mentioned. We could (left back aside) put out a team, who have all played for us in the premiership this year, with an average age of about 21. I doubt there are any other clubs who could say that. We need players who are experienced and can offer us something now, while those players mature.

Walcott offers us something we don’t have. He’s got pace, he can score goals from wide areas and makes runs beyond the striker. All things we are desperate for.

29 in 2 months time.

I asked for examples of pace reliant players who were still effective at 30+ and we got Robben (who retired at 32 and whose output dropped 50% when he hit 30) and Vardy (who didn't start pro-football until 25 so had less "miles in the legs" and is already having his pace drop)

Robben didn't retire at 32...
