Are we in a relegation battle right now?

Are we relegationally challenged?

  • No, too early in season, over 38 games there will be at least 3 crapper teams

It’s very very unlikely we’ll get relegated but it wouldn’t take much to draw us into uncomfortable territory.

From now until the end of February we have a decent run of fixtures (on paper at least), beating West Brom and palace would ease any immediate fears and we are capable of picking up points against Leicester and Watford.

There are a fair few poorer sides than us in this league, we have the quality to finish comfortably top half of the league.
Honestly, Leicester are far better than us

I think the opposite. I reckon 4 or 5 teams will fail to get 37 points. To get 37 points:

Swansea are on 17 from 23 played so would have to get 20 points from 15.
West Brom would have to get 18 from 15 left when they only have managed 19 points in 8 more attempts than that (23 games)
Stoke will more than likely lose at Old Trafford tonight and will need to get 17.

Can see 2 teams out of the sides from Bournemouth (in 13th) down to 17th failing to get the 37, as well as all 3 or at least 2 of the above. Huddersfield are one team I expect to be in real trouble.
Agreed. And even if these three do greatly improve their points return in what remains of the season there are another half dozen likely to get worse.
We'll need 11pts (say,3 wins and 2 draws) out of the last 15 games -- if my memory serves me right even Koeman was averaging better than that. The thing is, we just don't want to be anywhere near the bottom three going into the last handful of matches, so for all our sakes we want those last 11 points to be racked up before mid-April.

We are 7 points from a Europa place.
We are 7 points from the bottom three.
The "eye" test would tell me we are playing much closer to the latter than the former.
So I fail to recognize it's the "exact opposite" of where we are now
Enlighten me.
Number of teams between us and europa league/relegation is just as relevant as number of points. In order to get relegated we would have to be worse (in some cases much worse) then eight really bad teams. In order to get Europa league we would have to be better than two average teams.

Maybe semantics here, but I guess that we are in a relegation battle to the extent of how we are playing. Bottom line, we need to beat the teams below us. If we don't get at least 4 points from our next two games, we could slip into a battle

I'm not saying it's impossible that we'll be relegated. But you said it was more likely that we get relegated than we get a Europa league place. I'm saying the opposite is true: relegation is far less likely then a Europa league place. That said, both are unlikely.

Semantics. I said "We're in more of a relegation battle than we are in a fight for a Europa place battle"

The operative word being battle.

Beat West Brom and we should be pretty much safe.

Swansea have Liverpool and Arsenal in their next 2 games. Even if they beat Liverpool, with a win against West Brom we'd be 10 points clear. They won't make that gap up.

We'd be 11 ahead of West Brom.

There is no way that all the other remaining teams would get ahead of us.

We need United to win here

This is what is keeping us where we are, none of the teams behind are winning enough against the top sides and drawing with each other, so we wont go down and will more then likely stay top 10 but no thanks to ourselves
