PL place target for the rest of the season

Where do we need to finish for the season now to be acceptable?

Lets have it right, if Fat lad has the equivalent record for the remainder of the season (1.4 points per game) we get 34 points, which would get us to a total of 49 points. There's every chance we could finish 7h with that. That will be described as miraculous by some for Allardyce, yet disastrous for Unsworth. Odd, especially when you consider Allardyce will have a bundle to spend in January plus the return of McCarthy, Bolasie, Barkley, Mori & Coleman.
Some Evertonians hate their own. Always been the way I'm afraid.

Top ten is doable and I expect it. Bottom half unacceptable.

Just because he's supposed to be a "fire fighter" makes no difference. He'll have players back and players to bring in. He's two points off top ten right now. He's a football manager not a troubleshooter. Let's judge him on the criteria we judge all our managers on. I will be.

Me too. And I agree. The fire fighter tag is an easy one.

But 24 of those points are without any new players. With our backline, I'm not confident we can beat ANYONE. Not every team is going to have their Target guy and best striker injuried like West Ham.
We got half of the points possible under Unsworth who had no owner backing and therefore hardly any credibility with the team.

Allardyce has all the cards stacked in his favour and he has to do a lot more with this club than just survival. That isn't going to impress anyone. We're already in the safety zone.

I gave him credit for that, but let's not forget how brutal our early schedule was.

Regardless, I expect him to do better because of circumstance and especially considering he's getting paid 6M a year. But still, you can't disagree that we need significant upgrades in at least 3 spots that are not going to be cheap.

The team isn't good. West Ham made us look good, but that's a home game against a truly TRULY bad side hit by significant injuries to players that hurt us. No other team isn't going to have the players to hurt us. It's not going to be that easy until we get better players in. Big Sam won't change that, but I guess we will see.

Do you think that Allardyce will be given transfer dosh in Jan and how much? My first instinct is to think that it will be less than a lot of folk believe, and players will need to be sold first....just cannot see Moshiri throwing money at him

Watford were on a role and we overcame them eventually.

The nucleus of a good team is here (after that Dutch divvy spent £200M like!). Players coming back from injury alone would get us top ten. Factor in more signings and an attacker in particular and that is unquestionably a very reasonable basis to get top ten nailed on.

This is a poor poor league.

I know lots disagree with the appointment but the fact is that nobody was going to be appointed who could recover this season to any great degree in my opinion. There is no doubt that our defence needs a major overhaul not just tinkering at the edges and that would handicap any manager you care to name. I am hoping he sorts that aspect out and we then move away from the false dawn

He'll sell Barkley, Mirallas (who'll want out), Klaassen, Ramirez and maybe more. Sell to buy with a top up of about £20M on top would be my guess.

We should aim for 7th again. We finished 7th last season by default, we had one of the league's best strikers but apart from a run between January and March (exclusively at home I must add) we were pretty average last season. We'll have to work a lot harder to secure that position this time around but the only teams who have made notable strides from last season are Burnley and Watford. And we beat one of those two at our lowest possible point. Solid January we'll be top ten no problem. From then on I'd like us to go properly all out for the FA Cup.

Maybe, but there aren't any defenders coming back that can play CB or LB. That's the problem that I'm not sure how you get around.

For most part, agree Dave but that last bit could easily go into reverse.

Expectations for Dec for me:
  • Huddersfield (H) - 3 points
  • Liverpool (A) - 0 points
  • Newcastle (A) - 1 point
  • Swansea (H) - 3 points
  • Chelsea (H) - 1 point
  • WBA (A) - 1 point
  • Bournemouth - 1 point
That's the minimum we should be getting, Allardyce or no Allardyce. 25 points with 18 games remaining. Anything above this I will consider a very good return.

Totally believe in Big Sam, and we are only 10 points away from 6th. Our squad is better (on paper) than teams like Brighton, Burnley, Newcastle and Watford. So I'd be unhappy with anything but a Top 10 finish, with the hopes of 6/7th still very much there.

I'd be surprised if we got a point off Chelsea. I also don't think we match up very well with Newcastle, but I'll give you that one. We also better take 3 off Huddersfield. That's absolutely imperative. We also play Man U on the 1st, which would likely put us at 24 points with 17 remaining. It's also going to make it difficult to attract top talent when we will be soooo far from European spots at that point.

However, put another big, decent CB, a pacey LB, and a proper CF on this team and we could be in business.
