I really liked the appointment of Koeman, and I still have faith in him, even though he's not actually had a great track record. Like Martinez and Moyes used Everton as stepping stones, I'm happy for people to do that to us, as long as we do achieve success.
We have a Moyes / Martinez type appointment, then a Koeman type, then maybe the next one is a winner as a manager in the future. Koeman definitely saw in Everton a chance to win or get to CL football, and therefore further his own career. He doesn't strike me as the type looking for a big pay off, and I feel like this job is almost make or break for him, as the Feyenoord, Valencia and Southampton jobs have been below his expectations - he's aiming much higher. However, now in his mid 50s, if he doesn't make this work, he risks being an average manager, and not counted amongst the next level managers that he probably should be aspiring to.
I still would love to know what his footballing philosophy is. Pep Guardiola didn't have a great season last year, but he was showing flashes of the style he wants. Arsene Wenger, though it's frustrating, follows the same post-invincibles pattern of pretty passing football. Mourinho has the same style - aggressive, physical, fast football which is not necessarily pretty. Fergie too had a style we knew. With Koeman, I feel like he's far less a coach and tactician and much more a manager who assembles a team. Unfortunately, we need a coach as well, and i hope he either gets the best out of big dunc and Erwin Koeman, or somehow finds a new mojo and fresh energy that can kickstart the campaign.
It really is a tough one that we all feel he needs to change , but how hard is it for a person to change. I'm in my late 30s, and I find it really hard to change my nature for different jobs and projects I'm working on, and Koeman must find it tough to change his ways. Being himself is apparently not working at the moment, but still, if we support him, show him our support, support all the young English players we love, and the super non-English talent we have we will really continue to be the 'special club' we think we are!
