As I said earlier, the hamstring is such a crucial muscle for a footy player given its role as a decelerator in running.
With footy all about quick changes of pace and direction, a serious injury with a muscle tear (as a grade 3 is) can be problematic, particularly given scar tissue forms, and the integrity of the muscle is not what it was. Unfortunately with this tear comes an increased propensity for re-injury.

..tell me about it, they finished my playing days off. Even now if I break out of an old man's jog my hamstrings pop. As you say, the scar tissue is the problem.

Aye.
Well hopefully it isn't a grade 3 as was reported, and he takes as long as he needs to get himself back to full fitness.
I was quite surprised with the timeframe for return to sport, I know with it being elite sport I have to decrease my prognosis on injury time frames as these athletes get the very best care in the world, but 6 weeks seems a very short amount of time to complete a fully graded cohesive return to sport.

..absolutely. As far as I know, this is Barkley's first hamstring problem and it probably comes as a result of compensating following his recent surgery, but you're right players can subconsciously protect them. I'm sure this was the case with McCarthy who for a lengthy spell turned in very average performances and struggled for a game until we played Arsenal at home last season. In that game he let the hand brake off and turned in a fine display, played the same for one half against the Reds and the hamstring popped again.

They can be a ticking time bomb, hopefully Barkley's won't be a long standing issue.

If that's genuine then he's going nowhere, as a club couldn't take a flyer on a medical when he's out with a grade 3

It's bad enough him running down his contract to a year left and then wanting to leave, but to actually run it right down to guarantee himself a fat signing on bonus and inflated wage ... I don't think he'd ever be accepted at Goodison again, that'd be a pure scumbag thing for him to do.

It may give him time to think straight and rooney time to advise him hope he stays to fight for his place when fit and sign his contract or any contract -so we dont lose out!

Players are fickle things too, they change their minds all the time. If we get off to a good start and look a force this year he may want to stay and be part of it and actually the added comp in Klaasan, Rooney and Sigurdsson might bring the best out of him. The only challengers for his place over the last 4 years have been Naismith and Osman so he'e never been pushed. It could be the making of him.

Why not? Signing him for 5 years. Not that big a risk.

He didn't look like a player wanting to leave which is why I posted 'stayin' on Monday evening.

Plenty of players have been left with chocolate hamstrings after a severe tear like that, you'd be a brave man to whack £25m on the table for a player facing at least 2 additional months out with a severe hamstring tear.
