What we saw tonight is what we have got: a player who has no position, cannot hack it in his new 'role' as a 'number 10', is never going to be the Rooney we knew, and who is trying too hard to prove he is still the Rooney we knew.
I cannot see one reason why he should have stayed on the pitch tonight, what his contribution is expected to be, what his best position is now that he is (way) past his best, or for what reason (apart from the fact he is 'Wayne Rooney'), that he should be selected again.
This man is finished as a top player and those who are fawning over his return and praising him for 'trying' are deluding themselves.
He has nothing to offer on the pitch and all we have got is the Man Utd Rooney they were desperate to offload - not the one we were desperate to keep 13 long years ago.
