OK, quite a leftfield shout: I've got a feeling that Sunderland's Wahbi Khazri could become this year's Gana Gueye success story if we went in and picked him up. Since he left Bordeaux 18 months ago he hasn't been able to build on his reputation as one of the most creative wingers in the French league, but then again he's been playing in a really bad side and also seems to have fallen out badly with Moyes and hence become a peripheral figure at Sunderland. Compared to the latest flavour of the month players from the weaker continental leagues Khazri has already made the move to the Premier League and been confronted with the speed and the physicality, which to some extent could weigh up the fact that the player's been on a downward trajectory since he arrived in England.
Obviously the club has the money to aim higher than scrambling among benched outcast from relegated sides. But if we look beyond Sigurdsson, Mahrez and Lanzini there isn't a lot of established creative quality in the sides below us. Signing fringe players from CL clubs has never succeded, and bringing in emerging talent from abroad in this position comes with a lot of risk factors.
Checked in on a Sunderland fan forum, several posters rating Khazri as their best player now that Defoe is gone. Not saying much I know, but still ... The next Pienaar, anyone?
