Confirmed Signing Henry Onyekuru

Just watched his YouTube vids...

Very quick, got some tricks, good finisher. mostly played down the left flank, all left foot. Looks more like a Bolasie/ Lookman type then an out & out ST. Quite slight.

Can see why we would loan him out. Those defenders looked garbage, won't get that much freedom in premier league. Looks a very exciting prospect, makes total sense to keep playing regularly which I'd doubt he would for us next season.

Interesting that we are doing Anderlecht a favour by loaning him to them.

Maybe buttering them up before we steal all their players? Mind you, they are ALL rubbish.

Class that we can sign a top scorer from a league, then loan him to that country's biggest club, without any previous mentions of us even being in for him in the media. Love it.

He's not; Theodorczyk [Also RSCA] is the top scorer [here you go http://www.sport.be/nl/jupilerproleague/goudenstier/]. Equal amount of goals but Theo scored more away from home. Plus Theo played the EL and CL teams. Theo scored against the big teams; Onyekuru scored against teams like Roeselare.

Nobody says he'll play btw.

apologies if already posted but this article was in the Mail when it looked like Arsenal were going to sign him and gives a good analysis of him, sounds like a decent risk

Henry Onyekuru Q&A: Arsenal have agreed a £6.8m fee for Eupen winger, but who is he and is he really the player Arsene Wenger needs right now?
  • Henry Onyekuru looks set to be signed by Arsenal for £6.8million from Eupen

The first player signed by Arsenal since Arsene Wenger agreed to extend his contract looks set to be Henry Onyekuru, for £6.8million from Belgian club Eupen.

Onyekuru, 19, is away on international duty with Nigeria so is yet to agree terms at the Emirates Stadium, but a deal certainly appears to be imminent.

However, before Arsenal's interest became public, few had heard of this teenager, much less associated him with one of the Premier League's biggest clubs. Sportsmail has run the rule over Onyekuru to decide whether he is the new Cesc Fabregas, or the new Yaya Sanogo...

Onyekuru is largely unknown in Britain, but has some of the attributes needed to succeed

Who on earth is Henry Onyekuru?

If you are a regular patron of our transfer column, you will have seen Henry Onyekuru's name popping up regularly since January.

He was initially linked with Celtic as a replacement for Moussa Dembele, but a rumoured £1million bid was laughed away as he is 'too good' for Scottish football.

The following months saw most of the Premier League connected - Liverpool, Chelsea, Southampton, Swansea and West Brom to name five - but only Arsenal acted on a concrete bid.

Onyekuru's stats are impressive - this has been a breakthrough year. He scored 14 goals in 30 games in the Jupiler League - Belgium's top division - for a Eupen side that battled relegation, finishing 13th in the 16-team league. In total, 24 goals and nine assists in 41 club games in 2016-17.

He wants to leave - and even briefly went on strike claiming Eupen broke promises to sell him in January - and has just broken into the Nigeria senior team.

Onyekuru has been linked with a glut of Premier League clubs after 24 goals in 41 games

How does this young lad play?

Name the attributes of a stereotypical Wenger signing in the last 10 years - quick, small, skillful, an attacker who can play all across the front line but whose best position is not yet entirely clear - and you have a potted description of Onyekuru.

Onyekuru is unashamedly direct - he will pick the ball up, accelerate quickly, and go towards goal. He also has shades of Arjen Robben - he plays mostly on the left for Eupen, so he can cut in and shoot on his stronger right foot.

Surprisingly for one blessed with such pace, Onyekuru likes to come deep for the ball, rather than playing on the shoulder of defenders.

He is small of stature - 5ft 9in - but uses this quick change of direction effectively, bamboozling defenders, using his change of pace to get past his man rather than a barrage of step overs. He is a dream for YouTube compilation creators.

Onyekuru fits the Arsenal attacker template - quick, small, able to play in a number of roles

How will he fit into the Arsenal team?

With left wing seeming to be his home for now, it is likely he would be deployed in that role at Arsenal, providing competition for Alex Iwobi, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Unless he has a superb pre-season, however, it is quite unlikely Wenger will chuck him in at the deep end in the Premier League. His lightning pace and acceleration makes him an enticing option from the bench, to be introduced after the 70th minute when defenders are starting to tire.

With such interest from the Premier League mid-ranks, a potential year on loan could do him good too, as it did for Jack Wilshere when he impressed for Bolton Wanderers in his younger days.

Onyekuru could come into the Arsenal team immediately but may also go out on loan for a year

It's a chunky fee to pay for a teenager - is he worth the money?

Any forward is worth money if they score goals. Unlike Walcott and Iwobi, Onyekuru is a confident and composed finisher. He will try to take the ball around the keeper given the chance, and is partial to an impetuous flick or curler which would make him an instant hero among fans if it came off, and the subject of the latest Arsenal Fan TV rant if not.

He certainly is not the finished article. Those highlight reels do not show an unwillingness to track back and do his defensive bit, or his decision making which still smacks of teenage naivety.

However there is enough there to make it a worthwhile investment. When you consider Real Madrid have just spent £38m on Vinicius Junior, a 16-year-old yet to play 90 minutes of senior football, it looks like a bargain.

Onyekuru is far from the finished product, but Arsenal will consider £6.8m to be a bargain

Is an unknown 19-year-old winger what Arsenal need right now?

The main criticism of Wenger is that he has not signed the star players Arsenal need to compete for the biggest prizes. Even those who are glad he is staying at Arsenal want him to make more daring moves.

Onyekuru, an unknown who Wenger seems to have signed with little opposition from rivals - although with plenty of bids coming from Europe's medium sized clubs - does not fit that bill.

At least Arsenal fans can be assured they are getting a player who is delighted to be there. Onyekuru has said: 'I have had fun in Belgium, but I have always dreamed of the Premier League.'

If he is given time, Onyekuru has the makings of a Premier League star. Whether he gets that time is another matter.
