I've just Googled the book and it's author and it appears that he was not a police officer and was in fact a playwright.
Still a powerful book though.

Sad news that obviously pales into comparasion with other announcements today.

For a celebrity he seemed a good sort. Did a lot of great charity work and will always be my favourite Bond....terrible husband like.

haha, i was too. Classic campy Roger Moore era. Utterly ridiculous that scene when he stuffed that one bird in the closet and bedded the other one.
