Word of warning on Klaassen, we already have an almost identical example to go off in Siem De Jong. Ajax captain aged 24, attacking midfielder, banged the goals in, looked good in Europe, signs for Newcastle, can't get a game, back in Holland on loan and banging them in again. It really is a poor league, and for every Van Persie there are 4 or 5 who get badly exposed.

Thats my worry with players like Klassen or just out and out goalscorers like Janssen etc, Dolberg and to an extent Milik i watched and saw that although they where scoring its more their general all round play that marks them out as quality players, a great first touch and vision and natural instincts etc are good no matter what league your in

His brother bangs them in for PSV and was even worse for Newcastle.

Problem is Dave, 20m+ won't get him, not even now, never mind in a year or two.

That's the conundrum that faces the owner, is he willing to spend what it takes to get the calibre of player needed, if a player has already done it in a 'big' league - then they will either not be attractable by us, or they will have 'bigger fish' after them - as they've shown they can do it already.

So we either take a risk on younger less proven but ones with that look that little bit special and we pay what is needed to get them - not stick rigidly to what we think they are worth - else frankly we won't get them, or we take cheapish punts on players like Deulofeu etc - 'broken prospects' for want of a better word. Or we go down the route of paying over the odds for 'proven' premiership standard players - who by and large will not be players that make much of a difference - great for going from 11th to 7th or 15th to 10th etc, but to bridge the gap you need genuine quality after that.

Back in 99' Arsenal took a similar 11m punt on a 21yo French lad called Henry - in modern fees etc what would that be - 40m+?

He'd played in France and Italy and for the French national side when they won the world cup in 98.

He also didn't do anything until his 2nd season at Arsenal. And Arsenal had won the league the previous year so were in a better position to splash that money on a youth player.

We aren't.

Depay apart, how many Dutch players go for £30M+?

There's a limit you pay to that league. A 19 year old with one good season behind them doesn't get into that bracket mate.

Milik for about 28m after 1 good season at Ajax mate - i guess his fee will be the Ajax benchmark now
Suarez 6/7 years ago for 22m
Hunterlaar the season or two before for about the same as Suarez
and Schneider the season before him i think - again for about 22m

so in modern terms all those would have been comfortably over the 40m mark with the way prices have escalated.

For the other teams - only 1 i can think of is Depay who went for around the 30m mark from PSV

The TV money and amount the premiership clubs have now is having a major knock on effect all across the European league mate, whatever price you could have paid 3-4 years ago will be dounle or as good as now

Maybe. It'll be interesting to see if that inflation is translated generally into players from the Dutch and Belgian leagues.

IMO only with a virtuoso performance in the EL final will the numbers climb north of £25M for Dolberg.

It kind of started already too mate, United gave Juve huge money for Pogba, Juve used that to get Higuain from Napoli who then used a portion of it to go get Milik for a price normally only absolutely exceptional players have moved for fee wise from Holland.

Klassen being quoted at 21m as well - 3-4 years ago i'd guarantee it would have been no more than 10-12m absolute maximum for this level of player

You have also gotta factor in the much, much weaker Pound.

Evidence still thin on the ground though.

I'd prefer we looked in bigger leagues for the talent if that kind of cash is to be spent.

Dolberg as a second striker for £20M-25M plus an established striker like Chicharito for similar I think would be good policy.
