A big problem we have is that we badly need CBs and so do City, Liverpool and United. Arsenal need at least a backup and if Chelsea lose Ake they will too. So we are in a major competition with everyone but Spurs
Thing is mate take last season
Liverpool needed a cb - they got one - Matip - who wa son no one else's radar
City needed two according to the press anyway and rumours, they ended up getting one of them in Stones and spent the rest of the summer chasing Bonnucci and Laporte etc
United needed one - got linked with lots of big name centre backs and ended up buying Bailly, although they constantly got linked with others (Lindelof being the one everyone thought was a done deal - if so won't they just go back in for him?)
Chelsea similarly got linked with lots of in vogue big names and ended up getting Luiz who not one person called until it happened
Arsenal needed one and they got Mustaffi
Now this summer the media are linking all those teams again with needing another quality centre back, i just don't see it happening, they all needed on least season and they all went and got one, none of their centre backs has fallen of the cliff age wise, and very very rarely does a team address all of its needs as percieved in the media else all the top clubs would have perfect squads with loads of depth.
The most competition will come actually for the likes of Keane, Maguire and Gibson as they will all want to move - all play for bottom of the league clubs and all will be in the 'reasonable' price range and may even be willing to go to a big club as a squad player
For example, Spurs go for Maguire, United take Dier off them, City go for a Bonnucci or Laporte and get him this time around (or pick up a supposedly available Masscherano or the lad from Athletico for example), Liverpool pick up Gibson or some Matip type on the cheap from Germany and Chelsea go shopping in Italy again for Koulibally or Manolas.
In short, there is more centre backs around right now who could seriously improve us than there are teams that need them in the league.
