I would like to think because its merely a token gesture.

I get the hatred for the sun I really do, I hated it before the whole Hillsborough stuff because its a rubbish newspaper read by morons, however the majority of those responsible for that bile work elsewhere now and of course the bigger figures from back then are knee deep in the likes of Sky, Talksport etc etc. It just feels to me that the hatred is being taken out on an inanimate object, a few sheets of paper with rubbish news on, rather than the people actually responsible.

We should ban it just for the hell of it but then it looks worse if that makes any sense?

Nobody but the bloke himself will know if he purposely did it or not. Everyone is going on about checking wikipedia for his background or that people should know he is mixed race, it was a personal tweet wasn't it? I very much doubt any thought or attention was put into it.
