Ronald Koeman discussion

Well that could be true I guess. I actually think the fault lies with Koeman today on the whole. His options may have been limited but he got the team selection, tactics and formation woefully wrong today. Not a hanging offence but he's done it twice now during our good run and we got spanked both times (both score lines flattered us)

totally agree on that point mate. last 2 defeats we've had he hasn't set us up right whatsoever though like I mentioned before when you've got 7/8 players not playing at any kind of acceptable level your absolutely screwed.

Like I said earlier, he can shove it right back down our throats by going to Old Trafford and getting a result.

They are severely weakened as well. Another performance as timid as today though and we will get nothing.

I Hope we don't go on a bad run now. Koeman has a history of good and bad runs, both with Soton and us.

We need to bounce back quickly. If we can beat Man U (and I have my doubts without Coleman, Schneids and Ramiro) things will look better

Come on Ian. We were snotted and they will never have an easier fixture. They hardly had to get out of second gear. Let's call it as it is.

I thought they were in top gear and we never got out of 1st gear. Goals were the difference in that game. I thought all the goals were sloppy due to inexperience of Pennington and Holgate and a badly positioned goalie. Wouldn't say we were snotted but would say we didn't perform well due to Coleman and Schnides being unavailable.

Still not good enough and comparing it with last year's horror show is pointless. I wouldn't be defending it by any means. It's a horrendous and embarassing record for us and this hurts me to say it, but it's hard to defend our status as a big team when we can't even get motivated and compete in our local derby. Something has to change fast.
We need characters. Martinez didn't bring any and neither has Koeman (yet)

I was listening to a podcast recently where Dave Prentice was talking about Joe Royle going to watch the mini Derby prior to his first game in charge. They battered Liverpool and Ebrell, Parkinson and Hinchcliffe ran the show. Royle instantly got them back to the first team squad and he never lost a Derby, by having that kind of player.

We need some characters with some bollocks. Is it Koemans fault that our best players went missing today or were injured?

He has to take his share of the blame, but it's nights like this where those with knives out for the guy enjoy themselves. So I'm going to defend him and the club, because he, like Moshiri have given me hope this season.

And say it quietly, if Arsenal don't win tomorrow and we beat UTD we go fifth with back to back home games to follow.

No panic here, equally no cry arseing nor any bedwetting.

We'll be beaten by United but not agains after that, imo.

We have the pattern in place: by and large, poor and mediocre teams will be dispatched with efficiency; better teams we'll fear and struggle with. I can see us easily holding 7th on 65 points or so with the odd draw or two thrown in against a decent outfit.

I'm just really disappointed another season has gone by and they've done us twice. No bedwetting, no witchhunts, I'd just hoped for better.

Be consistent. It's the players or manager or it's a combination of both...for all managers who have had this lot under their tutelage.

See how it works in reality now?

Today it was the players. We had an injury crisis and we needed the established players to step up, or at least match their recent form and it was they who let the club down, but they have a great opportunity to bounce back on tuesday now.

I think we'll struggle to get 65 with our away record being as it is tbh. We are two completely different teams at the moment. Effective and ruthless at home. Naive and toothless away.

Liverpool are going to be a threat when Firminho, Mane and Coutihno play, you fancy one of them to get good chances in the game. And our center halves have a thing for parting like the red Sea when they're run at.

You can tell what Koeman was thinking in his approach to the game. I think he's still assessing the squad ahead of a big Summer. Today was an experiment. He gave the youngsters a go to either sink or swim. From it he would have gathered that Pennington doesn't look up to the job, Holgate is a good option but needs time to improve, and questions remain over DCL.

Should he still be experimenting this late on in the season? Probably not but I think 7th was his aim and so once a bit of distance was gained in that position that was that. Maybe we'll be better off from the learning curve in the long run.

But, I think he's nearing the end of his squad assessment for the next campaign. There's a solid 4-5 starters and the rest have been rotated. From looking at who he's been playing and other factors, I'd say anyone other than these are not safe in Koeman's plans - Lukaku, Barkley, Davies, Gueye, Schneiderlin, Coleman, Baines, Holgate, Williams, Lookman (Bolasie, Deulofeu?).

Those in bold will be starting in Koeman's first game of 2017/18. As for the rest, that remains to be seen. Both exciting and worrying at the same time.
