It was a bad night for Everton as they also lost James McCarthy to injury. The midfielder was withdrawn from the Ireland starting side after he appeared to aggravate his hamstring problem during the warm up. It is likely to re-ignite a row that started when Ronald Koeman, the Everton manager, said McCarthy lacked fitness in the build-up to the qualifier. McCarthy’s season has been blighted by hamstring and groin problems. O’Neill said he did not want to take chances. “James overstretched,” O’Neill said. “Once he complained, it was enough for me to think ‘no’.”

Considering the longevity of this hamstring problem now, I'm beginning to think MacCarthy may have already played his last game for us (and possibly anybody else.). He certainly won't be fit for next week surely ? Very sad to see a players career sputtering to an end ,as his appears to be.
Just hope the Lloyds premiums are paid up to date.

McCarthy has been incredibly stupid about this.
Regardless of the reason for pulling out of the game tonight he has been struggling with a hamstring all season.
Swanning off to join the national squad was a stupid thing to do. He needs to get properly over his injury, then get fit and then play.
He has not been involved with the Everton team because of the same recurring injury and tonight has proven again that Everton were right, Ireland wrong and McCarthy was stupid.
Let' s see if he is available next week.
This.

As far as I can tell Everton have the long term well being of the player as number one priority. It's unfortunate that neither himself or his country have the same opinion.

McCarthy knows his body better than anybody. Not for the first time he was determined to take risks to prove himself fit for last nights game and once again it has backfired. He has shown zero loyalty or commitment to the club that pays his salary and I've lost patience with him now. I hope RK has too.

I like him as a player. A fully fit and committed McCarthy is a big asset to the club. At the moment we have neither and with his current attitude of putting country above club and his own fitness, I don't believe we'll ever get that player back. I'd sell in the summer when we can still get decent money for him.

Always thought he came across as a good earnest, down to earth chap, not short on ability and just needed to be in a good system and he would of shined.
I actually now think he's a right arrogant selfish sod who is robbing a living from us, ungrateful waste of wages.

If this is true then mcarthy should be fined wages and shouldn't have went

It makes you question the capabilities of the Irish medical team. Koeman only last week spoke about his concerns for McCarthy and that the club was looking at 'other' ways to combat his fitness issues. However O'Neill dare I say it influenced by the Irish medical team, saw it fit to select McCarthy, when it was obvious to all that not only did McCarthy lack match fitness but also general fitness. Is it any wonder why clubs are so reluctant to release players for international duty when they are treated in this way.

It's not up to the player, if he is called up he has to go. If the Republic's doctor passes him fit to play then he can't say no, not that he'd want to. All footballers want to play, they don't want to be injured.
Given the history of us sending the injured/half fit players then coming back injured, I bet Keano told him to run it off and stop being wet. (I bet he told Coleman to stop being wet and run off his broken leg as well).
The player was passed by a doctor, and stopped as soon as he knew something wasn't right. If he'd have gone into start then properly collapsed 10-20mins in I'd have been fuming, but at least he was allowed to pull out before the kick off.

I really like mccarthy as a player in particular off the ball. Granted he isnt a genius on t but we need playera like him and think he can offer a lot to the squad. But that is when he is fit. It is getting to the stage where we cant continue to keep him in the squad as his hamstring seems to be a career staller. Maybe he should be sold. Besic is on the mend and should be ready for next season. A replacement would need to be brought in as well though.

Yes but knowing his own long, long history of repeated hamstring failures and the likely outcome given the Everton medical staffs concerns he should have man'd the f' up and told keane and his subordinate o'neil that 'with all due respect I'm putting my club first this time' out of loyalty and past experience. If he keeps doing the same thing and the outcome is always bad yet he still keeps doing it, he is either utterly, utterly stupid or an utter utter coward who bottles it against his Ireland bosses and would rather be an injured detriment to his club than risk confrontation with this pair of total lemons.
Shambles, long beyond a joke now. Get him fit, if at all possible, get him gone.

If you are an international manager and one of your key players says he is fit, do you play him? Of course you do.

If the medical team says he is fit to play then of course that confirms your decision. Why would any doctor forgo his professional opinion just to suit a football team?

McCarthy is injury prone, just face it. This could have easily happened 5 minutes before the Derby. And I say that with a heavy heart as I am a big supporter of his but I fear for his career now.

It's not his choice.
If he's called up, he has to go.
If he refuses, they can stop him playing for us.
