Ross Barkley

“He is changing his style. I don’t need Ross on the halfway line having eight touches on the ball,” said Koeman.

“We have enough players behind the ball. We need good players like him in front of the ball, between the lines and close to the box. That is what we need.

“We need players like Ross to have shots, to have assists and that is one of his big qualities. The boy is so strong, so good on the ball. He is shooting left, he is shooting right, he is clever, he sees chances.

“Look to the third goal, he’s trying to dribble but he knew already to make the assist for Romelu. That is what we need in our offensive game.”
He's changed his tune a bit hasn't he?

At Christmas he was saying this:

"Sometimes he is struggling with defending his man because he is more watching the ball than his man. Okay, we tried to explain and to show him. Even if you play deeper in midfield it is important to do your defensive work in the team.”

I expect there's some reasonable explanation for the volte face like.

Yes, there is, he bought Morgan Schneiderlin.

Oh right. that explains it then: "Ross, you dont work hard enough and have no discipline" <buys another player> "Ross, it's ok now. Hang around the 18 yard box".

I love a manager with a philosophy.

I don't think you quite understand the principles of management. You utilise the resources you have at the time to the best of their ability to achieve maximum results.

Chalk and cheese compared to the player he was last season. Playing for a good manager does that for players. You don't argue with Koeman. The squad is in awe of him. First time since Royle and Kendall we've had that.

Ha Ha Ha.

I thought for a second there you compared this Dutchman with Howard Kendall...oh...

Yeah, he's coming on leaps and bounds in terms of productivity:

Last season 8 goals and 8 assists
This season 4 goals and 7 assists

Good job he's 'benefitting from the reshaped team'.

:coffee:
Barkley scored two pens last season vs Newcastle and may have even taken another pen as well which distorts his scoring figures. Think he may well reach 8 goals again this year but will beat his assists total. I don't think you can say Barkley has been neutered when you look at some of the touches he is taking now and the apparent freedom he is playing with. No way last season would he have played that backheel throughball to rom against Bournemouth.

...by the same token any argument that Barkley has moved on another level is also wide of the mark if he;s ending the season on a par with what went before.

I'd rather have a consistently good Ross than a 1-world-class-game-in-10-meh-the-rest Ross.

Think we'll really see him kick on soon - he's been consistently excellent all year. Hopefully we get a new contract sorted soon.
