John Stones

Deflect all you want mate. The bottom line is that you believed Stones to be a world class defender, not me, and now you wont hold your hand up to it.

And you reckon he's the reincarnation of Carrick, despite being utterly different in nearly every way possible mate, being accused of deflecting a point though by you is a bit rich as that'd be your mastermind specialist subject.

Ruined, but not before registering a 39 goals conceded season - and after the defence was completely restructured when Moyes left.

It'll be interesting to see how many goals we concede this season. 27 now, so if we keep it below another 12 that would be an achievement. I camt see it like.

How was the defence completely restructured during Martinez first season mate? Did not Howard, Coleman, Baines, Distin and Jagielka start the majority of games?

Two centre backs splitting and allowing a cm to drop between them to bring it out; GK encouraged to play it to the back four; back four expected to circulate the ball and pick the right pass. All things not seen under the ginger divvy.

I'm probably in the minority here. I have no ill feeling or sense of satisfaction if he makes a mistake for his new club - it's football - he played for us, now he doesn't. It'll happen to other players who wear our shirt. No need to get excited about it.

I liked Stones, as much as the comparison rankles me, it's one of respect, he plays the game like Hansen did. A ball playing centre back confident in his ability to read the game and at his best, break through into midfield and make a great pass. Before you shoot me down with all your Ferdinand comparisons and satisfaction that he's made mistakes for City, it doesn't take away from the fact that he improved our team and he became the player he as because of the opportunities we gave him. Did I like the calm down nonsense to the Park End? The lads there know there football and I found that disrespectful and as Stones reflects on his career I'd like to think he would agree.

We got top dollar for a thoroughbred, because that's what he is...he outgrew Barnsley - anyone else seen the picture posted by Barkley when he was on loan at Leeds tussling with Stonesy v the Tykes? Both lads gave each great respect because they knew. I wanted him to stay at Everton because I think we'd have been a better club for his long term development, but his mind was made up to leave. Will he be a Great? To be honest, not sure, but for me, he's not our player anymore so does it matter?

I also harbour little ill will against him. Even those who resent him for wanting to leave can take solace in the fact we got a massive wedge for him.

I loved watching him play at times, class footballer - not perfect by a long shot, and perhaps we are better off without him, but seeing him progress under Koeman could've been ace.

I kick myself for celebrating his mistakes for city in games that don't affect us. Maybe because I don't want us to be like those over the park desperately trying to lick their wounded pride over a similar situation with Sterling.

Well said matey. I couldnt agree more. All players make mistakes. Was talking to some City fans who are quite pleased with the way he his playing atm.

We did see TWO 5th's on the run from the ginger divvy though

Why do you support Everton mate?

I'll give you the answer to that question just after you tell me how you replied this:

...in response to this:

I liked the idea of Stones, but as time goes on it's becoming harder to argue against him being simply garbage.

Definitely more Titus than Rio.

If City persevere with him for a couple of seasons I'm sure he will develop into a decent, consistent CB.

Problem is that if he continues to have so many ropey performances,City will panic and get shut.Where would that leave him? He wouldn't get touched by a top 6 team and will end up at somewhere like Stoke or Palace.

Truth is he left Everton far too early in his career. He needed a couple more seasons improving and developing.
